Southwest Businesses "Pumped" for Open Streets Minneapolis

The event takes place on Sunday, June 12, between 10 a.m - 2 p.m., on Lyndale Avenue South between 22nd Street and 42nd Street.

Experience the freedom of going car-free this Sunday, as Open Streets come to Lyndale Avenue South in Minneapolis. During the event, which restricts cars between 22nd and 42nd Streets, cycle or saunter your way over to a Lyndale business without any parallel parking anxiety or fear of losing a side mirror.

For their part, Lyndale Avenue businesses are embracing the event, and many have planned specials or special events to coincide with Open Streets Minneapolis.

“The whole neighborhood is pretty pumped,” Crystal Zavada, owner of Belle Weather, said.

Belle Weather will be holding a sidewalk sale, and its neighbor June, which is usually closed on Sundays, will be open for Open Streets.

Chef Hector Ruiz at El Meson said the restaurant will also be open during the event and there will be street food sold outside such as empanadas and Mexican corn on the cob.

At Bull Run Coffee Bar there will be discounts on whole bean purchases during the event as well as a “two at two” deal, starting when Open Streets Minneapolis ends at 2 p.m. and running until 3 p.m., when all coffee drinks will be sold for $2.00.

“Tour Lyndale and then come relax,” Gordon Bellaver, part-owner and manager of Bull Run Coffee Bar, said.

Andrew Bell, owner of Twin Town Guitars, said the sidewalk in front of the store will serve as a makeshift stage, featuring the musical stylings of Adam Levy’s kids rock band Bunny Clogs as well as likely performances by locals Ben Glaros, Brianna Lane and others.

If you’re looking to add a little zen to your morning, the Twin Cities traveling yoga group dedicated to practicing yoga in unexpected urban environments and raising money for local non-profits, Gorilla Yogis, will hold a 75-minute vinyasa yoga practice beginning at 10:30 a.m. at Lake and Lyndale. A $10 donation is suggested, with Full Cycle–a Minneapolis bike-centered non-profit aimed at helped homeless and at-risk youth–benefiting from the proceeds.
