Five Southwest High Seniors Among National Merit Semifinalists

The students were among 16,000 selected from a pool of 1.5 million applicants.

Five Southwest High School seniors were recently named semifinalists in the 59th annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

The list of semifinalists was released on Sept. 11 and outlines the students still in the running for 8,000 National Merit Scholarships—worth about $35 million—set to be awarded next spring.

Approximately 90 percent of the semifinalists are expected to attain finalist standing, with more than half of those finalists ultimately winning a National Merit Scholarship.
