You misstated me. I said this is NOT a political issue. Although I do understand the inherent differences between guns and knives, knives have been used to the same degree as guns in this case and my point was that more gun controls is not the answer. In fact, history has proved that the more law abiding citizens are disarmed, the more violence against them increases. Solutions to this problem are obviously complex and go beyond a discussion in a forum such as this, but guns are not the root cause, there is somehting deeper. To immediately push for gun control is sidestepping the real cause and helping to perpetuate the problem. My point was and is that it is shameful for Betty McCollum to exploit this terrible tradgedy to try and score political points.

ReplyIt's shameful for Rep. McCollum to exploit this tradgedy to make a political point in support of her agenda and to attack her political opposition. This is not a political problem that can be legislated away. More gun control will not prevent anyone from carrying out their desire for murder as the recent attacks in China where the attackers used knives and meat cleavers demonstrate.

ReplyFirst of all, she originally plead not guilty to this charge, so her claim that she "did not challenge the charge" is untrue. Furthermore people who simply have a one-time lapse of judgement, she claims, or simply had an "extra libation" as another commenter opined, do not get whiskey plates. According to Minnesota statute a person may get their license plates impounded if they are a repeat offender, if their blood alcohol level was 2 times the legal limit (severly intoxicated) or there was a child under 16 year of age in the vehicle. According to the police record she will be on probation until 2014. We ought to hold our civic leaders to a high standard, not a relative standard based other peoples' bad behavior. It's unfortunate that one comment mentioned that the drunk driving has lost its stigma as I'm pretty sure the families of the victims of drunk drivers still feel the pain.

Unity to her own party means absolutely nothing in the broader picture.

ReplyMcGuire betrays her intellectual immaturity by asserting her goal to "push back against the divisive right-wing agenda" as apparently anyone who is not in lockstep with her own idealogical agenda is divisive. Ironically, she is the one who is establishing herself as divisive by alienating a large portion of her district which do not share her "progressive" values by making such a derogatory statement and she obviously fails to appreciate the non-partisan nature of of the County Commissioner role.

Mr./Ms. Clone, such a mean-spirited, sarcastic and personal comment really has no place in the public discourse of such an important issue.

The way Democrats are able to claim that people at higher income levels pay a lower effective rate than people at lower income levels is by including sales taxes in the calculation. Because people at higher income levels save a larger percentage of their income compared to people at lower income levels they don't incur sales taxes, when expressed as a perctage of income, at the same rate as people at lower income levels. Due to the effect that sales taxes are not calculated on income, including them in the calculation is really like comparing apples to oranges and it really doesn't provide a basis for saying that people at higher income levels aren't paying their fair share.
