On the article District May Soon Allow Cellphones In School

ReplyThe story does not say the district relied on Nielsen studies. Patch did independent research to give readers a rough sense of cellphones' prevalence among the student population, given that data specific to Minneapolis students, or specific to teenagers' ownership of smartphones is hard to come by.
Furthermore, the story does not say the district is planning to require smartphone use as part of a change in curriculum: as the story says, under the proposed plan, cell phones may be used at the discretion of the teacher as part of a classroom exercise. The intent, as far as I have been told by advocates of the policy change, is to permit teachers and principals to experiment.

ReplyI'm not sure what my parents did, but I was actually afraid of swearing until summer camp during my middle school years. There, all the cool kids in my cabin swore a lot and I made myself swear to fit in!

Peter - As soon as Sheila Reagan found out she had made the above mistakes, she contacted me immediately with corrections and admitted her errors, as any responsible reporter would do. In my experience working with her, Sheila has been a competent reporter and investigator, and Southwest Minneapolis Patch stands behind her previous reporting. However, if you have specific concerns about facts in specific articles she has written in the past, I urge you to contact me with details (my email address is at the top of this page). The charges you've made are serious, and I would like to investigate them.
