ReplyI was a sophmore in high school that spring and had attended a play at Washburn with my new boyfriend. After the play he suggested we go to a place he had heard about just down the street - walkable was important as neither of us had cars, or licenses for that matter. It was of course the Malt Shop - couldn't have been open more than a month at that point. I was totally charmed and have been many times over the past 40 years as I still live in SW Mpls, and now take my own daughters there.

ReplyAgree with all these recommendations - was laid off from a major corporation headquartered in Minneapolis in August of this last year a part of a large down-sizing, and was able to land an excellent new position in about 6 months due to some excellent career coaching that was provided. My experiences during my job hunt back up everything said in this article.

On the article Should City Keep Killing Cats?

ReplyMostly agree with Rachel. I used to love cats until I became extremely allergic to them, now have next door neighbors who are great, but let their cats roam outside. We have two bird feeders between our house and theirs and there are two many days I feel like I should take them out because they only serve as a cat buffet. Would be interested in seeing some cost comparisons for the two approaches. With the city's budget so tight, I'd be willing to support whichever cost the taxpayers less, but agree that re-releasing 'fixed' cats does nothing to solve the issue of them preying on birds.

ReplyI grew up in MN and also have to agree - forget any notion of 'Minnesotat Nice' once behind the wheel of a car. I've done road trips through many other states and hands down MN drivers are consistently the worst I've encountered. Even in NYC where the traffic is clearly much heavier. In addition to all the point Rachel made is the refusal of MN drivers to turn on their headlights. Attitude seems to be "Well, I can see clearly, so why should I" - they just do not get how much more visible it makes them to other drivers, and therefore makes the highways much safer.

John - I've seen in other reports that BCAH came out fine. I was relieved to see that as I had also been concerned. Sure we've both done a fair bit of business there over the years.

Let's not forget - Kiffmeyer used to be Sec. of State in Minnesota - and used that office to attempt to restrict voting rights. So glad she's not in that office any longer. I just can't see any way that allowing businesses to exclude serving some customers based on their personal biases/beliefs is anything other than outright discrimination. We don't allow that based on any other factor - thank goodness we're moving towards a society that won't allow it on this one either.
