Should Minnehaha Creek Bike Path Be Extended?

Locals pushing for more access to creek west of Humboldt Avenue.

According to the Southwest Journal, two Southwest Minneapolis residents need your opinions. Paul Ragozzino, president of the Lynnhurst Neighborhood Association, and Jim Tincher, Fulton Neighborhood Association president, are lobbying the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board to increase access to Minnehaha Creek west of Humboldt Avenue South. The creek is currently lined with bike and walking paths between Humboldt Avenue and the creek's terminus at Minnehaha Falls, part of Minneapolis' Grand Rounds chain of parkways and trails. At Humboldt, the trails turn sharply northward to connect with Lake Harriet. Between Humboldt and the city border, the creek is publicly owned, but practical access is limited. “We started out with just wanting to …

Road Race Closes SW Minneapolis Roads Today

"Women Run The Cities" lasts until 12:30 p.m.

Stay away from Minnehaha Parkway on Sunday. That's because it's being taken over by "Women Run The Cities," a charity 10-kilometer road race and walk. The event runs from 6 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Racers are raising money for the Ann Bancroft Foundation. According to the race's website, the foundation gives money to the "Dare to Dream" program, which provides micro-grants to 6th through 10th grade girls looking to achieve "a dream." The foundation also funds the annual Dream Maker Awards that recognize people and organizations that help young women realize their potential.

Wounded Officer Lured Into Park

Officer stabbed late Tuesday night.

Follow us on Facebook | Sign up for our free daily newsletter UPDATE 4:02 p.m. 8/22/12: At a news conference Wednesday afternoon, Minneapolis Police Department spokesperson Sgt. William Palmer said investigators wanted to stress that this was an isolated incident, and homicide investigators have no other suspects at this time.  ORIGINAL Story: The late-night plea for help that could have killed a Minneapolis Park Police officer Tuesday nightwas a fake call, designed to lure the officer in, according to Minneapolis Police Department investigators. Around 11:30 Tuesday night, a man called 911, reporting he'd just been mugged at knifepoint near the corner of West Minnehaha Parkway and Bryant Avenue South. Two Minneapolis Park Police officers …

Minneapolis In Flash Flood Watch Tonight

Sunday night rains could cause problems.

Sunday morning, the National Weather Service issued a flash flood watch covering Minneapolis and many parts of southern Minnesota. The watch lasts until Monday morning. Sunday afternoon and evening rains, it said, could cause flooding. Between one and three inches of precipitation is expected. The same area saw between two and five inches of rain earlier this week. With the ground saturated and creeks running high, the Weather Service said: Flooding is possible in low-lying and poor drainage areas. Heavy rainfall in short periods of time frequently causes urban flooding and can wash out rural roads. Any ground that is saturated will add to flooding potential. In addition to the threat of flash flooding, the heavy rains could also result in…

Will Dangerous Coyotes Invade Minneapolis?

The animals have killed two dogs in St Louis Park recently, and some have been seen near the Chain of Lakes.

At least two dogs have reportedly been slain by coyotes in St Louis Park in recent weeks. Unlike humans, though coyotes know no municipal borders, and are moving into Southwest Minneapolis, according to the City of Minneapolis. See our interactive map of coyote sightings, and add yours! So far, Dan Niziolek of Minneapolis Animal Care and Control said, his office has only heard a small, slowly increasing number of coyote sightings. But with Minnehaha Creek, a partially-wooded golf course, and several lakes in Southwest Minneapolis, he said coyotes could easily make their way into this corner of the city. "There are a number of variables that will drive it in terms of what their food situation is, and what the incentive might be," he told …

I see them often when I am walking my dogs near Pearl Park. People with pet cats in the area should avoid letting them out at night as I am sure they are behind all of the missing cat signs that I see. Bye the way, they are beautiful animals.   more ›

MAP: Coyote Sightings In Southwest Minneapolis

St Louis Park Coyotes are slowly making their way to Minneapolis. Add your sightings to our interactive map!

With the death toll at two St Louis Park dogs and counting, should Southwest Minneapolis residents be worried about a pending—or current—coyote invasion?  So far, officials from Minneapolis Animal Care and Control say they have only heard a "slow increase" in coyote sightings in the city. Wildlife are generally making their way into urban areas around the Twin Cities, they say, although coyotes haven't penetrated nearly as deeply as wild turkeys. To help us identify where the coyotes are, please add a marker to the map above. Simply click the "Add" button, supply your name, the approximate address of the sighting, and additional information: For more information on coyotes in the Twin Cities, see the Minneapolis Animal Care and Control …

Southwest Minneapolis In Flash Flood Watch

Storms will hit tonight.

Southwest Minneapolis looks set to become Southwet Minneapolis Wednesday afternoon, the National Weather Service issued a flash flood watch for the Twin Cities and much of southwestern Minnesota. A chain of rainstorms are forecast to stall over the region, dumping as much as two inches of rain in some places. "Showers and thunderstorms will continue to expand today. Widespread rain is expected tonight with a swath of heavy rain across Minnesota. Looking ahead, a frontal boundary will stall out across the area, which will allow the active weather to continue across the region through the weekend." But residents along Minnehaha Creek shouldn't worry about the stream bursting its banks, said Telly Mamayek of the Minnehaha Creek Watershed …

How To Survive the 2012 Minnesota Fishing Opener

Boat? Check. Rod and tackle? Check. Craziness? Check.

Minnesota has seen more than its fair share of cold, wet and windy fishing openers, but it doesn't look like 2012 will be one of them. Forecasts call for clear skies with morning lows in the upper 40s and afternoon highs in the high 70s. The fishing season officially begins at the stroke of midnight, and Minnesota's Department of Natural Resources (DNR) expects anglers to find a good bite throughout the state. Read the metro area fishing outlook here. Minnesota is the nation’s leader in fishing participation (28 percent of residents age 16 or older buy a license). About 500,000 anglers typically hit the water on opening day, and about 1.4 million people buy Minnesota fishing licenses each year. Minnesota's general fishing opener is the …

You Don't Want To Know What This Controls

Large industrial equipment—beautiful or disgusting?

While the Lyndale Avenue Bridge gets rebiuilt, all kinds of things are coming out of the ground, from old mill ruins to modern infrastructure. Most of these archaeological finds are worth investigating further, but these two long, black snakes winding their way through the woods along Minnehaha Creek probably won't do much for you. Though the valves may seem pretty to some, they're in fact controlling the flow of sewage!

Lyndale Ave Bridge To Close Ahead of Schedule

Closure starts next week.

Due to the unseasonably warm weather, Hennepin County has decided to get a jump on rebuilding the Lyndale Ave. bridge over Minnehaha Creek, starting on Jan. 17, two weeks ahead of schedule.  The bridge is built on top of mill ruins and an earlier bridge that spanned the waters, and some may be revealed during the reconstruction. If you spot any, email pictures to the Southwest Minneapolis Patch editor at James.Sanna@Patch.com In an email to constituents, Hennepin County Commissioner Gail Dorfman said that the extra time would help the contractor meet a March 15 deadline to cease work in the creekbed that's intended to reduce the impact on protected species.  East and West Minnehaha Parkway will remain open to bikes and pedestrians during …
