District Asks for Help in Picking Next Washburn Principal

Carol Markham-Cousins was removed from the position in April.

While the dust still settles from the events surrounding the reassignment of Carol Markham-Cousins, the Minneapolis Public Schools district is in the process of finding her replacement. Markham-Cousins was removed from her position as Washburn High School principal April 11 after district officials said a change in leadership was necessary to restore the school’s learning enviornment. Of course, many attribute her dismissal to the investigation surrounding Washburn Athletic Director Dan Pratt, which led to demonstrations by students and community members. Craig Vana, a veteran administrator in the district, is serving as interim prinicipal. According to a letter from Associate Superintendent Theresa Battle, the district hopes to have a new…

The article would appear to imply that Ms. Cousins was somehow "responsible" for the difficulties Mr.Pratt faced surrounding the score board. This is NOT true and the students appeared to have made the same assumption. Any threat to Mr.Pratt's job was coming from the district. The superintendents and the school board are causing the majority of the problems faced by Washburn. The faster the …   more ›

District Addresses Markham-Cousins Dismissal, Pratt Investigation

Minneapolis Public Schools puts together an FAQ on the recent Washburn HIgh School events.

Editor's Note: The following was recently published on Washburn High School's website regarding the reassignment of former principal Carol Markham-Cousins and the search for her replacement. *** We understand that this situation is challenging for both the Washburn community and the Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS) community as a whole. We hope the community understands that MPS is limited by law in what we can say about this matter. Even if the subjects of the information speak out, MPS cannot comment unless the individuals give us permission to make the information public. Private personnel and student matters have been the subject of social media and mass media coverage. Although these reports are often filled with inaccuracies or half-…

How 'Washburn Spring' Brought 'Regime Change': Star Tribune

Student protesters, online and at Washburn High School, had a role in Principal Carol Markham-Cousins' departure, the newspaper reported.

In an article in Saturday's edition, the Star Tribune reviewed how Washburn High School students who organized on the Internet and on the ground to save Athletic Director Dan Pratt's job contributed to the reassignement of Principal Carol Markham-Cousins: Some are calling it the “Washburn Spring.” Dissident Minneapolis students using Facebook whipped up popular protests that led to a high school version of regime change, the ouster of Principal Carol Markham-Cousins. “Just like the Arab Spring, it was youth that started it all through social media,” said Jamison Whiting. What Right Do Students Have to Protest at School?

Washburn High School administrators didn’t excuse students who walked out in protest April 8. Was that the right decision?

Hundreds of Washburn High School students walked out of school April 8 to support the school’s athletic director, Dan Pratt. The district is investigating Pratt for a “private personnel matter”—thought to be related to the purchase of a scoreboard—and students worry that he’s on the verge of being fired. In the lead-up to the walkout, high school administrators warned that absences would not be excused. A statement on the school’s website said: While we respect students’ rights to demonstrate, if a student chooses to participate, the absence will not be excused. If the student chooses to leave school, he or she will not be allowed into school or after-school activities on that day. Students will be welcomed back the following day for a …

Skipping is skipping and unexcused absences are unexcused absences; protest after or before school. That is what we did. (on the public sidewalk, so the school couldn't say they are trespassing). We had a favorite bus driver that was fired by the school board for a really stupid reason (it has been over 30 years ago) and students were upset and we protested before and after school. If you were …   more ›
