Minneapolis Police Crack Down on 'Scavenging'

People stealing scrap metal and other recyclables from neighborhood garbage cans is a problem, police say.

Over the next few weeks Minneapolis police officers will be checking alleys for people stealing recycling and scrap metal from garbage and recycling containers. According to the Minneapolis Police Department, the theft of refuse and recycling is illegal and has become a problem in the city: Recycling theft or “scavenging” is the unauthorized collection of recyclable materials set out by residents for authorized collection programs with the City. City of Minneapolis Ordinance 244.355 (c) states that it’s against the law. Although you may feel this is a harmless crime, scavenging gives individuals an opportunity to survey what items you have in your alley, garage and home and takes revenue from the City that could have helped keep your solid…

For years there was a rather shabby fellow in his 50s who, with his 8 year old grandson in tow, "scavenged" our recycling each week, hauling away the cans. They had a great time getting up early, working hard, making some money, and spending quality time together. What Crimes Are Most Prevalent in Your Neighborhood?

Statistics show that violent crime is down in Hennepin County. Tell us what crimes you’re seeing in your community.

According to a recent Hennepin County Sheriff's Office press release, from 2006 and 2012, violent crime in Hennepin County has decreased 37 percent. The FBI says that murder, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault all make up “violent crime.” The Sheriff’s Office reports that in 2012, the county saw the lowest amount of violent crime in more than two decades. And while violent crimes may be decreasing, Twin Cities residents still see various crimes impact their neighborhoods. In Golden Valley, police recently warned residents about a string of mail thefts. Last January, Minnetonka police alerted homeowners to a rash of burglaries. Business thefts, including an incident that led to a dangerous police chase, have taken place in Eden Prairie. …
