The newest addition to the 5300 block of Lyndale Avenue, FreeStyle Yogurt, is set to open its doors Tuesday, April 16. Owner Dave Brandner confirmed the opening with Patch Tuesday afternoon. With other locations in St. Paul, Roseville and Hudson, WI, FreeStyle boasts that it can offer a healthier alternative for locals with a sweet tooth. "Our product has around one-third the calories of ice cream, half the sugar, and 95 percent of our flavors have no cholesterol," Brandner told Patch in a previous interview. Thrusday night, Beeks King of Pizza and Diamond Lake Rental met a sad end at the hands of a three-alarm fire. Southwest Minneapolis residents captured the event—including some fantastic pictures—on Twitter. If city is trying to boost density, could that come to Southwest Minneapolis?
Shortly before I left for Boston to enjoy some family time, the Star-Tribune ran a story outlining city officials' quest to get more higher-density housing built in Minneapolis. Several major projects underway illustrate a trend toward tightly packed, urban living that is playing out in cities across the United States, giving Minneapolis planners hope of recapturing population the city lost starting in the 1950s. More apartments and condominiums got the green light in Minneapolis this year than any in recent history -- about 2,800 in 22 new buildings so far. When 2012 gives way to 2013 in a few weeks' time, the Windom neighborhood will lose one of its many small businesses. Yoga studio Sigh Yoga will go out of business on Dec. 28, according to an email owners Mario and Brandyn Negri sent to fans last week. "Our lives have changed for the good because of each of you. We are forever grateful," the email read. "While it has been gratifying to create a new studio and meet so many new friends, it has been challenging to build a business that is sustainable." New bridge inaugurated by parade of bicycles, dignitaries, a motorcycle, a St. Bernard, and a wheelchair.
To residents on both sides of the brand-new Lyndale Avenue Bridge, Monday afternoon must have been a bit of a "hallelujah" moment. Shortly after 1 p.m., local business and civic leaders including City Councilmember John Quincy (Ward 11) and Nicollet-East Harriet Business Association (NEHBA) President Matt Perry snapped five pairs of scissors on a bright red ribbon stretched across the bridge's southern end. The crowd then parted, allowing South Lyndale Liquors owner Dan Campo and his St. Bernard to motor across the bridge on Campo's distinctive motorcycle in the company of a herd of cyclists and lead by a woman in a powered wheelchair, holding her coffee cup aloft like a victorious banner. This week is poised to be one of celebration for the communities along the southern end of Lyndale Avenue in Southwest Minneapolis. Monday afternoon, the brand-new bridge will be dedicated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 1 p.m. All day Saturday, the new bridge and the rebuilt South Lyndale roadway will be the subject of an all-day block party. “In 1997, residents from the 10 neighborhoods along this corridor developed a vision for a 21st century Lyndale Avenue that connected the neighborhoods, was safe for pedestrians and vehicles, and restored the grandeur of the avenue.
