Pavement Removals Complete Between 56th and 60th Streets: Penn Avenue South Reconstruction Update

The public works department updates residents on the next steps of the Penn Avenue South reconstruction project that began April 10.

The reconstruction of Penn Avenue South is well underway. Meyer Contracting crews completed pavement removals between 56th and 60th streets this week, and are now working on storm sewers. In addition, CenterPoint Energy is working on gas services between those streets. The first phase of road reconstruction began April 10. Penn Avenue is closed thru traffic between West 54th and 60th streets. However, all east/west cross-streets, including 60th and 54th streets, are open. In addition, businesses are also open through the construction. According to the project's webpage, the project includes the removal and replacement of the pavement, curb and gutter, driveway aprons, and storm drain inlets, as well as signal upgrades. Crews Work on Gas, Sewer Line Replacement: Penn Avenue Reconstruction Update

The public works department updates residents on the next steps of the Penn Avenue South reconstruction project that began April 10.

After being delayed by a couple spring snow storms and rain, crews have began working on the reconstruction of Penn Avenue South again. Currently, CenterPoint Energy and Meyer Contracting are respectively working on gas line and sewer replacement, according to a recent Minneapolis Department of Public Works e-newsletter update. The first phase of road reconstruction began April 10. Penn Avenue is closed thru traffic between West 54th and 60th streets. Multiple Overnight I-494 Lane Closures Begin Monday

The road construction season has officially begun.

Now that the weather has finally shaped up this week, crews are at work on Interstate 494. Drivers should be aware that multiple overnight lanes and ramp closures will be sprinkled throughout this week. The following is from MnDOT: At 10 p.m. May 6 through May 10, both directions of I-494 will be reduced to a single lane between Highway 100 and Xerxes Avenue. All lanes will re-open by 6 a.m. daily through May 10, and by 9 a.m. Saturday, May 11.  At 10 p.m. Monday, May 6, and Wednesday, May 8, westbound I-494 between 12th Avenue South and Portland Avenue will be reduced to a single lane. What gets me is that the state/city are always repaving the same roads every three years, it seems. Yet the roads continually fall apart. Look at the way Vernon Avenue from Hwy 100 to Gleason has fallen apart in just a few years since it was resurfaced. And that road gets very few trucks.   more ›

Portion of Nicollet Avenue South Now Closed for Reconstruction

While crews were delayed a day due to the weather, pavement started being removed Thursday.

Nicollet Avenue South is now closed from 36th Street to about half way between 37th and 38th streets for the second phase of the avenue's reconstruction project. Despite the wet conditions and getting a one-day late start, crews began removing the pavement between the blocked off areas Thursday morning, according to Beverly Warmka, project engineer. Businesses are open during construction and local access to them, as well as residences, will be maintained. As for traffic detours, buses and vehicles have been rerouted to 1st and Blaisdell avenues. Thomas and Sons expects to begin working on the storm sewer the week of May 13, the recent newsletter said. Stoplights to Be Replaced By Four-Way Stops at 58th & 56th Streets: Penn Avenue Reconstruction Update

The public works department updates residents on the next steps of the Penn Avenue South reconstruction project that began April 10.

Changes to Penn Avenue South continued this week, as crews worked to remove ash trees and take out stoplights at two intersections. The traffic control lights were taken down at 58th and 56th streets and will be replaced by four-way stops, according to a to the Minneapolis Department of Public Works. In addition, all but one infected ash tree were removed from the boulevard. They remaining ash tree at the corner of 61st Street and Penn will be removed next week. Commuters, bus riders and residents along Penn Avenue South were greeted with some major changes to the street last Wednesday. The first phase of road reconstruction closed thru traffic on Penn between West 54th and 60th streets, and remains closed at this time. However, all east/west cross-streets, including 60th and 54th streets, are open. In addition, businesses are also open through the construction. According to the project's webpage, the project includes the removal and replacement of the pavement, curb and gutter, driveway aprons, and storm drain inlets, as well as signal upgrades. France Ramp to Eastbound I-494 Closes Sunday Until May

Eastbound and westbound traffic will also be reduced to one lane in each direction for for a few overnight stints next week.

Despite the recent spring snow storm, Minnesota Department of Transportation crews are continuing their work on the I-494 corridor. With the spring construction season underway, new closures will begin Sunday, April 14. The ramp from France Avenue onto eastbound I-494 will close until sometime in May, but may open sooner. Detour signs will be posted. In addition, at 10 p.m. on April 14 through April 18, both directions of I-494 between France and Penn avenues will be reduced to single lanes. Phase I of Penn Avenue Reconstruction Begins Wednesday

Penn Avenue will be closed to thru traffic between West 54th and 60th streets.

Penn Avenue South will begin getting a facelift Wednesday. The Minneapolis Department of Public Works recently announced Phase I of the avenue's reconstruction would begin Wednesday, April 10. Beginning Wednesday, the Penn Avenue will be closed to thru traffic between West 54th and 60th streets. Vehicle and bus traffic will be detoured to Xerxes Avenue via Highway 62 and West 50th Street. According to public works, all east/west cross-streets, including 60th and 54th streets, will remain open until further notice. In addition, all businesses will remain open, and access to those businesses will be maintained as much as possible.
