Sheriff Endorses Legislation to Reduce Gun Violence

Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek joined lawmakers and Minnesota Sheriffs’ Association at the Capitol Wednesday.

Wednesday, Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek and the Minnesota Sheriffs’ Association announced support for state legislation that would improve public safety by strengthening gun background checks and increasing punishments for repeat offenders. Sheriff Stanek and Minnesota Sheriffs’ Association Executive Director Jim Franklin joined a bipartisan group of lawmakers at the State Capitol in St. Paul to support the legislation authored by State Representative Debra Hilstrom of Brooklyn Center. POLL: Should Minneapolis Teachers Be Allowed Guns In School?

Seward Montessori staffer brought a pistol yesterday.

Wednesday, Seward Montessori was put on lockdown after administrators learned that a staff member had brought a gun to school. The staff member was keeping the loaded gun in a locked locker, according to an email statement from Minneapolis Public Schools.  "There was no evidence that the employee intended to use the weapon; however, bringing a gun to school is against Minnesota law, violates MPS policy and creates a potentially unsafe situation," the statement read. The district called police around 8:30 a.m. when the weapon's existance was revealed. The staffer was removed from the building and placed on administrative leave. Ellison Calls For Gun Law Reform In Wake Of CT Shooting

Congressman is co-sponsor to bill pushing assault weapons ban, other measures.

Decrying the Newtown, CT massacre and the large number of mass shootings in America in recent years, Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) called on his congressional colleagues to pass a package of gun control laws he had co-sponsored. “As parents, we cannot imagine the deep pain that such a tragedy leaves in its wake," read a statement jointly released by the offices of Ellison and Rep. Raul Grijalva (D-AZ) on Monday. “Such tragedies cannot be ignored or accepted as the new norm." Grijalva and Ellison co-chair the House of Representatives' Progressive Caucus.
