"Multiple Measurement Ratings" designed to improve on No Child Left Behind system
According to the Twin Cities Daily Planet, the Minnesota Department of Education's new Multiple Measurement Ratings school evaluation system is not all it's cracked up to be. Teachers and leaders at Southwest Minneapolis' Kenny Community School found themselves confused when the school was simultaneously labeled a successful "celebration" school and a troubled "focus" school. For school leaders like Gibbs, the new system is confusing. Most teachers interviewed hardly knew what it was...(Principal Bill) Gibbs agrees that Kenny should be celebrated for the dramatic changes it’s undergone. But change didn’t happen in a year, and the new ranking system won’t change a school culture that revolves around data and test scores Partly by using in-…

School board member says no.
Five of Southwest Minneapolis' public schools may be looking less than stellar this week after a new state rankings system labeled them as schools with "extreme" achievement gaps. State officials say the new rating is not a punishment, but an opportunity for the schools to grow, with their help. However, a school board member is criticizing parts of Minnesota's new yardstick, saying it "doesn't tell the whole story." Burroughs Community School Burroughs scored similarly high, but like Armatage, the school does not have large numbers of poor students of color. In Minneapolis, these students tend to arrive at the first day of school farther behind than other students in the district. Lyndale Community School While Lyndale has traditionally been known as a school that helps underprivileged, underperforming students make strong gains, it did not fare well in the measurement system. It only scored a 13.92 …
Schools must have improvement plans in place by September.
Lyndale Community School may be the darling of Kingfield, Lyndale, CARAG, and East Harriet parents, but this week it's looking a little less lustrous. Locally renowned for its ability to help under-performing students catch up to academic standards, the school is one of many Minnesota schools classified as "Focus" schools under the state's new school grading system. These schools represent the middle 10 percent of the state's public schools which also have "extreme" achievement gaps. Kenny Community School, Windom Spanish Immersion School, Ramsey International Fine Arts Center, and Washburn High School were also labeled "Focus" schools. What Will Change? The new designation means the school will have to come up with a new improvement plan…
