It's two days after the first winter storm walloped Southwest Minneapolis with around 12 inches of snow, and many of the area's side streets are still rutted and slippery despite the ministrations of city plow drivers. After a three-day waltz of parking and reparking cars to avoid snow emergency tow trucks, the question on many drivers' and cyclists' minds is, of course, "why?" On the region's highways, the situation is driven by cold temperatures. Road conditions the deciding factor.
Updated 12:41 p.m. 2/29/11: Minneapolis Public Schools just issued the following announcement: (A)ll after-school activities, including Community Education youth enrichment classes and Area Learning Center (ALC) after-school activities for the day due to road conditions. While the National Weather Service reduced its winter storm warning Tuesday to a winter storm advisory for most of metro area, Southwest Minneapolis residents obviously aren't yet out of the winter storm woods. Expect area precipitation to alternate between freezing rain and a wintry mix Wednesday morning, with one to three inches of snow likely accumulating throughout the day. Update 1:12 p.m. 2-28-12: It looks like "Snow-My-Not" rather than "Snow-My-God" here in Southwest Minneapolis, but that hasn't stopped Delta airlines offering passengers traveling today the ability to make one-time changes to flights without the usual fees. Update 9:10 a.m. 2-28-12: The forecast keeps getting milder—the National Weather Service is now saying temperatures today are likely to hit 35, and only an inch of snow and sleet accumulation looks likely.
