Citywide Hockey Coach Ends First Season With Big Plans for Future

Former NFL players-turned-coaches looking to expand Novas program.

The Minneapolis Novas boys and girls teams may not have advanced past their section tournaments this hockey season, but the heads of Minneapolis' citywide hockey program have high hopes for the future. According to a new profile in the Minnesota Daily, head coach Joe Dziedzic  and assistant coach Tom Chorske say they're making progress in their plan to rebuild the city's hockey program. The Novas draw from all seven city high schools because no one school has enough interested students to form a team , and the team hasn't been able to build a reputation as a competitive place to play. “You still find families that want to live in Minneapolis — they like that quality of living,” Chorske told the U of M paper. “But then they’ll also have …

New Nova's Hockey Coach Making Progress

Boy's team taking strides in scoring.

According to the Star Tribune, the Minneapolis Novas hockey team are making strong strides towards rebuilding their team. In many of their last games, the paper reports, the team has scored 10 or more goals per game. As Patch reported last year, the arrival of former NHL player and Minneapolis native Joe Dziedic has given some Minneapolis hockey fans cause to hope the flagging team could be revived. Two years ago, low interest in each public high school's hockey program caused the district to merge the teams into a single program. But the Star Tribune report contains a quote that could be worrying to local hockey fans: "We have a senior-heavy team with a few kids who have a scorer's touch," said first-year coach Joe Dziedzic, a Minneapolis…

The key fundamental for hockey is a strong youth program. Minneapolis now has this and Coach Dziedic is involved at that level as well. On top of that, his on ice teaching is excellent. And although his time with FSN does not allow him the same commitment, Tom Chorske has also been working with the program.   more ›

Former NHL Player To Coach Minneapolis Hockey

Joe Dziedzic, former Pittsburgh Penguins wing, was St. Paul Academy coach.

Tuesday afternoon, the Minneapolis Public Schools announced that former Pittsburgh Penguins left wing Joe Dziedzic would take over the district's boys varsity hockey program, the Novas. Dziedzic most recently coached the St. Paul Academy/Mounds Park Academy boys varsity hockey team.  A native of Northeast Minneapolis, Dziedzic is a graduate of Edison High School, where he was named Minnesota Mr. Hockey in his senior year. After attending the University of Minnesota, Dziedzic was snagged by Pittsburgh Penguins scouts for the team's 1995-1996 and 1996-1997 seasons. He spent his last season with the Phoenix Coyotes and the minor league Springfield Falcons, until an eye injury in 2000 ended his professional career. According to statistics …

Best Southwest High School Sports Moments This Season

Southwest Minneapolis Patch has asked a number of high school sports boosters to tell us about their favorite sports moments this season.

Patch asked Southwest Alumni Foundation President Jodi Wishart Anderson what her favorite sports moments were from the Southwest High School 2010-2011 season. A 1990 graduate of Southwest, she's re-engaged with the school (in a big way) in the last year. Apart from the top three moments listed below, Anderson said the record of Southwest's outstanding achievements is long: "Girls state championship in high jump, third straight city title in dance, baseball playoffs, volleyball sectionals, softball city champs, girls golf city champs, and we have the largest math team in the state." Here are Anderson's picks: Southwest Football Shows Class "I was thrilled with our co-conference championship in football this year. John Biezuns was named …

Season's End Drawing Near For Novas in Girls Hockey

Minneapolis girls hockey team falls at Blake on Monday; possible section preview on tap Thursday night.

It hasn't been the kind of year that coach John Wareham had hoped for his Minneapolis girls hockey team as the youthful Novas entered the final week of the regular season with an 8-0 loss at Blake on Monday night. "We've been struggling to score this year," he said. "Even in our wins, we've only scored two goals each — except for one win where we only had one goal." The Novas struggled to put the puck on net once again against the Bears, only mustering up its tenth shot of the game in the matchup's final seconds. However, Minneapolis goaltender Hannah Hilden-Reid had one of her finer games in spite of giving up eight goals as the Minneapolis Southwest junior made 54 saves while facing some of the best shots that the second-ranked team in …

Novas Boys Easily Handle Pine City/Rush City with Gov. Dayton in Attendance

Game was over before the big defenseman sang, with an 8-2 Novas victory.

Like the hundreds in attendance Friday evening, Minnesota’s new governor drove to the Parade Ice Garden through a heavy snowfall. He then took part in a ceremonial opening face-off, pressed the flesh, sat and watched the first seven or eight minutes of the opening period and then left the building. Had Gov. Mark Dayton waited a little longer, he could have walked out with Benny Bissonette, the tall Minneapolis Nova defensemen who got his team’s first two goals but split to go sing in a concert at St. Mary’s Basilica. Bissonette returned for the third period, which concluded with the Nova’s, the Minneapolis Public Schools’ combined high school hockey team, soundly beating the Pine City/Rush City Dragons, 8-2. Asked after the game if leaving…

Minneapolis Novas Run Over Becker/Big Lake in Boys Hockey

In total, Minneapolis took 57 shots on the goal compared to Becker's 12 attempts.

Just before the four minute mark in the first period, Minneapolis Novas sophomore Brandon Arms scored to kick off the Nova's 12-1 victory over Becker/Big Lake in Princeton Tuesday.  The victory puts the Novas at 3-1, tied for the lead of the Two Rivers Conference with Moose Lake.  Novas Coach Shawn Reid said he was happy with the performance, with scores from every line and a solid defense throughout the game.  "We did have a deeper, more talented team than Becker but at the same time the boys played with respect to their opponent, respect to the game, played very hard until the very end."  The Novas scoring was led by senior Alec Kelly, who notched three scores and two assists. Sophomore Joe Guimont scored two goals and one assist. And …

Strange Ramblings and Other Horrible Nonsense

On the Road and On the Chin: Girl Novas Fall to the St. Paul Blades

The Minneapolis Novas girls hockey team lost to the St. Paul Blades Thursday at Phalen Arena. Sports opinion columnist Charlie Vaughan narrates the young team's Sisyphean struggle.

In an up-and-down game marred by penalties, the Minneapolis Nova girls fell and rallied and fell, ultimately losing 5-3 to the St. Paul Blades. The spirited road loss dropped the varsity Novas to 1-4 on the season. It was hockey ripe in the mythology of poor Sisyphus, the Greek king sentenced by the gods to forever heft an immense boulder up a steep hill. Three times the Novas fought the game to a one goal deficit, wrestling the outcome into doubt, only to have the Blades roll back down the ice and score again to keep the game safely at arm's length. In an early scrum, the young Novas allowed a rebound goal to the Blades. But they tied the game five minutes into the first period when talented freshman Katy Fuller's slap-shot deflected …

Minneapolis Novas Boys Win Opener Over Bulldogs

Coach Shawn Reid and the Minneapolis Novas defeated the Le Sueur-Henderson Bulldogs 6-2 in their season opener.

The Minneapolis Novas boys hockey team opened their season with a 6-2 win over Le Sueur-Henderson/St. Peter Bulldogs.  Novas Coach Shawn Reid said the team played energetically throughout the game, sticking with the element of speed that they'd emphasized in practice.  In the first period, a face-off led to a Bulldogs score with seven seconds left, which put the Novas down 1-0 heading into the locker room.  "Nobody hung their heads, Reid said. "We controlled play in the first period, they remembered that and built on it." It turned into what Reid described as a Nova "onslaught." The Novas took almost twice many shots on the goal as the Bulldogs. Minneapolis scored two goals in the second period to take the lead, followed by four goals in …
