Growler Magazine, a journal of Minnesota beer enthusiasts, are hunting for the best of the local beverage scene.
Southwest Minneapolis has long been a nest of homebrewers. Fulton Beer and Harriet Brewing both started as homebrew outfits in different Southwest Minneapolis garages, and Surly Brewing's Todd Haug is a longtime Linden Hills resident. Now, these companies and Lynnhurst's South Lyndale Liquors are going head-to-head against scores of area companies in the "Kind of a Big Deal" contest organized by the beer enthusiasts at Growler Magazine. As Growler writes, the local beer scene is exploding, and even attracting a good deal of attention from city politicians: The best thing about the Minnesota craft beer scene right now is the energy. New breweries are popping up, restaurants are widening their craft beer offerings, there’s seemingly a new …

If you're planning on picking apples this fall, you'll want to get out there very soon.
If you plan on picking your own apples this season, you will want to head to the orchard soon. “It’s a crazy, crazy apple year,” Chris Aamodt, of Aamodt’s Apple Farm in Stillwater said Wednesday morning. “If you want to pick apples this year, you better do it now. I bet we’ll be done picking apples by the end of September, if not sooner.” Find orchards for apple picking near Minneapolis with our handy guide. A Tough Year That advice comes on the tail end of a tough year for apple growers nationwide. Spring freezes decimated this year’s apple crop from the Mississippi River to the Atlantic Ocean, Aamodt said. Washington State was doing well, but got hit by hailstorm about a month ago, wiping out about half the crop. Drought and high winds …

Sebastian Joe's donating money to MLK Park.
Want a great excuse for scarfing down some ice cream this week? Look no further than Anodyne Coffeehouse, where Kingfield’s Crème Fraiche Curry Crunch is on sale. One dollar of each scoop of Curry Crunch sold at Anodyne goes towards a new playground at Martin Luther King, Jr. Park. The flavor was whipped up by Sebastian Joe's, and first made its debut at a Kingfield National Night Out block party earlier this month. Guilty pleasures and worthy causes are all well and good, but what does this new flavor taste like? In the interests of journalistic inquiry, Patch bought a pint Wednesday afternoon, to sample. We have to report that it tastes a bit like a frozen laasi, or traditional Indian yoghurt drink. Taking its base flavor from the light…

Some people come early to church to work on the flower arrangements or get the doughnuts and coffee ready. Kayla Ivarson, a Hopkins resident who attends Solomon's Porch in Southwest Minneapolis' Kingfield neighborhood comes early to help feed people afflicted by HIV and AIDS. This past Sunday, Ivarson and a clutch of children from the congregation knelt on the sidewalk outside the church building, wrists-deep in a patch of cherry tomatoes. At the mere suggestion of a shiny red anything peeking out from the dense foliage, eager fingers plunged into the thicket, emerging to release the fruit—plonk!—over a large piece of Tupperware sitting on the cement. As the gang moved a few yards east to a miniature forest of pepper plants, and with the …

Food pantries call for help from the Twin Cities' gardeners.
Late July. It's the time of year that zucchini and melons start to take over local gardens like so many triffids. And sometimes, you just can't scarf them down fast enough, no matter how many potlucks you hold. That's where Hunger-Free Minnesota is hoping to come in. With a new program called Good to Grow, the local nonprofit is looking for gardeners across the metro area to donate their extra produce to nearby food shelves. "No donation's too big, no donation's too small, said Judy Monn, spokesperson for Hunger-Free Minnesota. "We will always take as much as you can get." To sign up, just drop Monn and her colleagues a line at good2grow@hungerfreemn.org. All the organization needs is a name and a mailing address. The first 200 to sign …
Find out which market has this famous pizza, plus what's on sale this weekend.
Last week, Fulton Farmers Market's Big River Pizza got a big pat on the back from those arbiters of local foodie taste, The Heavy Table. "For achieving a sublime crust and having scrupulous sourcing habits and pretty flawless technique, this author puts Big River Pizza into the top five pizzas in the metro," they wrote. "That’s right, Lola, Black Sheep, Nea, and Punch, you have mobile company." It's an honor that would only surprise those who haven't tried owner/chef Steve Lott's creations. One secret, Lott told Patch several weekends ago when we first met, is in the oven. Lott took a fancy, kiln-like wood fired oven—the kind that would normally grace the dining room of a restaurant—and mounted it on a trailer towed by his van. That, and …

Weekly tastings help draw customers during roadwork.
Wednesday evening, South Lyndale Liquors will be giving a select group of patrons an introduction to a unique formula: one grape variety plus three farms in different parts of Spain, equals three very different wines. The event, dubbed a “geekfest” by South Lyndale staff, will explore 12 wines from the Iberian Peninsula. Included in the mix are several wines made from an unsung white grape called godello, which South Lyndale staff said could have potential to be “pretty important” in the next few years. The idea for a Spanish-themed wine tasting came, in part, from the diversity of climates in Spain—arid to lush, cool, and mountainous—which produce such wildly different wines (the technical term for this is terroir), South Lyndale staff …
