UPDATED: Police Arrest Three in Garage Burglaries

Burglaries have surged this summer in the Fifth Precinct; additional officers will be on the streets.

In the dark of Friday night, someone quietly slipped into a yard on the 4900 block of Stevens Avenue South. Unseen, they discovered the side door of the house's garage had been left unlocked. I am genuinely confused as to why a thief would try to sell a bike back to its owner. Did the thief not realize this individual was the bike's owner? This seems like a strange tactic.   more ›

If you see scrappers driving through your alley CALL 911. They are the ones taking bikes and other property illegally. They are unlicensed trash haulers that steal recyclables that the city makes money on. The police will look for they and issue citations.   more ›

1) Thank you to the police for citing the scrappers. They are unlicensed trash collectors who deprive the city of the recycling revenue. There should be an ordinance that prohibits "scrapping". 2) I believe that many of the bike thefts are done by these scrappers. I called 911 last week on a scrapper whose truck & trailer has several bikes, all in good looking condition. These scrappers wonder …   more ›
