They Only Wanted 24: Linden Hills Thieves Make Unusual Heist

A roundup of crimes and incidents reported to and by the Minneapolis Police Department on Dec. 4.

A truck owner woke up to an unpleasant—if strange—surprise on Tuesday morning in Linden Hills, according to a report filed by officers with the Minneapolis Police Department. After parking their vehicle near the corner of 44th Street and Vincent Avenue South around 8:30 p.m. on Monday night, the driver left for the night. When they returned at 7:30 a.m. the next morning, they discovered their car was missing two wheels. Some time during the night, unknown thieves put all four corners of the vehicle on blocks, removed the front two tires, and made off with all 24 lug nuts off each wheel. The rear two tires were left on the truck, while the culprits piled the other two on the boulevard, leaning on a tree. No similar thefts were reported in …

SW Minneapolis' City Council Rep Files For Mayor

Betsy Hodges represents all or part of seven Southwest Minneapolis neighborhoods.

According to the Star-Tribune and the Southwest Journal, Ward 13 City Councilmember Betsy Hodges has filed papers to run for Mayor of Minneapolis in 2013. In recent months, speculation has been rife about Mayor RT Rybak's political future. Rybak, who also co-chairs the Democratic National Committee, is rumored to be in the running for a prominent position in the Obama administration. He has not yet said whether he will run for mayor in next year's citywide elections. Hodges portrayed her filings as a legal technicality, pointing out that state law required a candidate file election papers after spending or raising $100. “R.T. is a good mayor," Hodges told the Star-Tribune. "If he chose to serve again I would respect that." In an interview …

Well, I think RT has been an excellent mayor, and I think if he chooses to run again, the city should back him for his excellent management of the budget and crucial investments in infrastructure. Good luck Mayor Rybak with your potential gig at the Obama Administration, and good luck to all potential candidates for mayor if he doesn't run again.   more ›

PHOTOS: Lyndale Ave Bridge Now Open For Business

New bridge inaugurated by parade of bicycles, dignitaries, a motorcycle, a St. Bernard, and a wheelchair.

To residents on both sides of the brand-new Lyndale Avenue Bridge, Monday afternoon must have been a bit of a "hallelujah" moment. Shortly after 1 p.m., local business and civic leaders including City Councilmember John Quincy (Ward 11) and Nicollet-East Harriet Business Association (NEHBA) President Matt Perry snapped five pairs of scissors on a bright red ribbon stretched across the bridge's southern end. The crowd then parted, allowing South Lyndale Liquors owner Dan Campo and his St. Bernard to motor across the bridge on Campo's distinctive motorcycle in the company of a herd of cyclists and lead by a woman in a powered wheelchair, holding her coffee cup aloft like a victorious banner. "I felt like I was living in a gated community" …

Lyndale Bridge Opening To Be Celebrated With Block Party Saturday

Bridge ribbon-cutting at 1 p.m. Monday

This week is poised to be one of celebration for the communities along the southern end of Lyndale Avenue in Southwest Minneapolis. Monday afternoon, the brand-new bridge will be dedicated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 1 p.m. All day Saturday, the new bridge and the rebuilt South Lyndale roadway will be the subject of an all-day block party. “In 1997, residents from the 10 neighborhoods along this corridor developed a vision for a 21st century Lyndale Avenue that connected the neighborhoods, was safe for pedestrians and vehicles, and restored the grandeur of the avenue. Completion of this project is the realization of their vision,” said Hennepin County Commissioner Gail Dorfman in a written statement sent to Patch last week. “Lyndale …

Could years of construction noise, dust, and inconvinience be finally at an end for Kenny, Windom, Tangletown and Lynnhurst residents around the 54th and Lyndale intersection? The Lyndale Avenue Bridge is set to open to traffic on-schedule, following a ribbon-cutting at 1 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 15. “In 1997, residents from the 10 neighborhoods along this corridor developed a vision for a 21st century Lyndale Avenue that connected the neighborhoods, was safe for pedestrians and vehicles, and restored the grandeur of the avenue. Completion of this project is the realization of their vision,” said Hennepin County Commissioner Gail Dorfman in a written statement emailed to reporters on Tuesday. “Lyndale Avenue is now not just a transportation …

I'll be curious to see what kind of redevelopment happens in the area. Seems like a natural place, what with the highway access and the well-known schools nearby. Are there any spots where people would and wouldn't like to see some redevelopment?   more ›

Reward Offered in Lyndale Ave Carjacking

Victim beaten with high-heeled shoe.

Three weeks ago, a 60-year old Windom resident stood pressed against a fence on West 56th Street, literally under the heel of an attacker. A few minutes earlier on Aug. 25, around 1 p.m., three women visiting a renter at the Metro Inn Motel on the 5600 block of Lyndale Avenue South had just caused a riot in the motel's lobby. According to officers with the Minneapolis Police Department, motel employees had asked the renter if he intended to stay another night. The renter left, the three women came to the motel's office in a rage. Police haven't specified what got the women worked up, but the trio allegedly threw a coffee pot and other items in the office causing minor injury to both employees there. Storming out of the Metro Inn, the women…

Lyndale Ave Bridge to Reopen Soon

Bridge has been under construction since January.

At long last, the Lyndale Avenue bridge over Minnehaha Creek looks set to reopen on schedule. That's the word from the Nicollet-East Harriet Business Association, who has been monitoring progress on the bridge and the concurrent reconstruction of Lyndale Avenue since the bridge was closed in January. As the group wrote on its LyndaleReconstruction.com website on Wednesday: (Workers) still have work to do on the manholes and sidewalks (including preparing the tree grates, preparing the medians, lighting etc.) so there will be a lot of movement of cones but access to businesses will be maintained throughout the changes and should actually be better as we move forward. The bridge is scheduled to re-open on Oct. 15.

Sign Up For Our Free Newsletter | Follow Us On Facebook A Windom woman was violently assaulted with a high-heeled shoe early Saturday afternoon by an assailant who stole her car keys and car. The woman had just parked her car on West 56th Street, steps away from Mount Olivet Day Services, and was walking eastbound when an unknown woman approached her from behind and demanded her keys, according to an incident report filed by officers with the Minneapolis Police Department. Rather than giving in to her assailant, the victim fled, yelling for help from anyone around her. The second woman gave chase, continuing to demand the victim’s keys, and quickly cornered her against a backyard fence a few yards away. She then began striking the victim …

MAP: Lynnhurst Block Raided By Garage Burglars

Crimes come despite last week's arrests, Police warnings.

Despite three recent arrests ostensiably linked to a summer surge in garage burglaries, over a dozen houses across Southwest Minneapolis saw their garages broken into Sunday night and early Monday morning. A total of 14 were hit between 8:30 p.m. on Sunday and 10:00 a.m. on Monday, according to reports filed by officers with the Minneapolis Police Department. Several of the cases were clustered together, including three neighboring houses on the 5000 block of Oliver Avenue south. In each case, criminals nabbed expensive bicycles and pocket change from cars parked in the garages. The pattern continues a trend Minneapolis police warned residents about on Monday. Unusually, the burglary spree's intensity seemed to show through in the redacted…

Local Whooping Cough Infection Rates Skyrocket

Minneapolis infants particularly at risk—Find where to get vaccinated.

What causes violent coughing fits and pneumonia, hospitalizes nearly 6 in 10 infants who contract it, and is highly contagious? It's whooping cough, and as of June 30 Hennepin County health authorities had recorded nearly four times as many cases so far this year as they'd seen in all of 2011. Cases are up across the country, including an outbreak in Washington state which the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have termed an "epidemic." While statistics broken down by city were not immediately available from the Minnesota Department of Health, the department's June 30 figures say 489 cases of pertussis  have occurred in Minnesota so far this year, compared to 163 last year. Whooping cough is a thoroughly …
