The Minneapolis Parks and Recreation Departments has a ton of a events scheduled throughout the early spring at area parks.
The following is a list of special spring events happening at Minneapolis parks. The events are listed by date. For more metro area event options, click here. Union aproves contract over the weekend.
According to the Star Tribune, union members at several local grocery stores vote to approve a new contract over the weekend. The vote averts the posibility of a strike, which could have happened if union members rejected the deal. Negotiators from the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 653 and several local grocery store chains had been trying to hammer out a deal for a month. The deal represents a one-year extension of the current union contract, which was agreed upon three years ago. The Star Tribune quotes a former union president saying both sides agreed on an extension, rather than a new contract, to see how President Barack Obama's health care overhaul would impact supermarkets' health care costs. Feb. 4 A resident of the 3300 block of Blaisdell Ave South had a fairly unfortunate morning, but an excellent excuse for being late to work. Around 6:30 a.m., they started their car, but realized they had left their wallet inside. They ran back into their home to grab the missing item, but when they emerged minutes later, the car had vanished. The thief barely made it 10 minutes away before smashing into another car and fleeing on foot. The police report grimly noted "the car was not driveable" after the crash. Two 20-year old men were arrested on the 6100 block of Lyndale Ave South and booked into the Hennepin County Jail on narcotics charges just before 8 p.m. The police report reads a bit like a mad lib. South Lyndale Ave greeted Friday morning with a depressing tableau.
The reek of smoke still hung in the air of South Lyndale Avenue Friday afternoon as rush hour traffic crept past the destroyed home of Beeks King of Pizza and Diamond Lake Rental. Thursday evening's fire had savaged the structure. The three billboards on top of the single-story building leaned inwards, while pipes and bits of collapsed ceiling hung n a tangled mess from the remaining walls, visible through the exploded windows. The rear part of the building, including the Beek's kitchen space, had collapsed in a pile of rubble. An oversized boxing glove lay on a window sill. When reached by phone, staff at Beek's St. Louis Park location said the businesses owners were not yet ready to speak to the public.

Thrusday night, Beeks King of Pizza and Diamond Lake Rental met a sad end at the hands of a three-alarm fire. Southwest Minneapolis residents captured the event—including some fantastic pictures—on Twitter. Star Tribune: Firefighter suffers minor injuries Fox 9: Building expected to be a total loss Update 10:15 p.m. 1/24/13: According to a written statement issued by Minneapolis Fire Marshal Perry Ebner, the Beeks fire started shortly before 6 p.m. The cause is still unknown. When fire crews arrived, the Beeks' customers and employees had already evacuated. A roundup of crimes and incidents reported by the Minneapolis Police Department Jan. 7 and 8.
Two CARAG residents and one Savage resident were robbed at gunpoint late Tuesday night, according to a report filed by officers with the Minneapolis Police Department. The trio, all in their mid-20's, were seated in their vehicle on the 3400 block of Colfax Avenue South around 10 p.m. They told police they were waiting for a friend, when three other men appeared out of the night. Allegedly wielding at least one gun, the men robbed the car's occupants of unspecified objects before fleeing. Police say they recovered finger prints from the car's door handle. "Multiple Measurement Ratings" designed to improve on No Child Left Behind system
According to the Twin Cities Daily Planet, the Minnesota Department of Education's new Multiple Measurement Ratings school evaluation system is not all it's cracked up to be. Teachers and leaders at Southwest Minneapolis' Kenny Community School found themselves confused when the school was simultaneously labeled a successful "celebration" school and a troubled "focus" school. Wednesday morning, an unfortunate 12-year old woke up an hour late for school, according to a report filed by officers with the Minneapolis Police Department. Bravely, he started out for Anthony Middle School. By the time he reached the intersection of 48th and Nicollet, though, it was already 10:30 a.m.—an hour passed Anthony's start time. That's when officers patrolling Tangletown spotted him. Police pulled over to question the boy, as he "appeared to be a juvenile," according to the police report's legalese. On finding out that he was late for school, they gave him a ride to Anthony and released the boy to school staff. To top it all off, the boy seems to have escaped being cited for truancy.
