What's Open and Closed on Christmas Day in Minneapolis?

Much of the city is shut down.

Much of Minneapolis will be closed on Christmas Day.  Restaurants Most restaurants will be closed, but it never hurts to call ahead if you're not sure. Grocery Stores Every grocery store in Southwest Minneapolis (Cub Foods, Kowalski's, Linden Hills Co-op) will be closed. Government City of Minneapolis offices will be closed, but police and fire personnel are still on duty. City parking meters will not be enforced, but all other parking restrictions in the city remain in effect and subject to enforcement, including Park Board meters along city parkways, and University of Minnesota parking meters. If the city normally picks up your garbage and recycling on Tuesday Dec. 25 or Wednesday Dec. 26, pickup will be a day later than it normally …

Where's Santa? Track Him Live from Minneapolis!

Through the North American Aerospace Defense Command, you can follow the jolly man's magical flight on this page.

They sent him their wish lists, sat on his lap, and left cookies and milk for his arrival. Now the only thing left for children to do is track Santa's progress as he delivers gifts around the world on Christmas Eve. Thanks to the folks behind the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) website, families worldwide can now follow Santa's Christmas journey in real time. If you'd like to know some of the science behind Santa, check out NPR's interview with astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson. The tradition started in 1955 after an advertisement for Sears Roebuck & Co. misprinted a telephone number for a special "Santa hotline." Instead of reaching Kris Kringle, the number put kids through to the Continental Air Defense Command (CONAD) …

5 Things To Do In SW Minneapolis Before The World Ends Friday

It's incredibly unlikely, but why hedge your bets?

The Mayan Apocalypse may be entirely apocryphal—see NASA for details—but just in case, here's Southwest Minneapolis Patch's shortlist for things you should do around town before the world ends. Why hedge your bets, we say, when you could have a lot of fun even if the world doesn't end? This list just represents our opinion, though, so add your picks in the comments! Update 10:21 a.m. 12/19/21: If you're in the mood, you could also add Pizzeria Lola's End of the World Party to your list of things to do. Thursday night, show up in "your favorite outfit that you will never wear again," as the restaurant's Facebook page puts it. Best outfits (to be determined by voting on Friday) will win things like gift cards to Lola and other prizes.

Our family was adopted by a large company through our childrens school, they gave us a $100 gift card to Wal-Mart... so I have to buy them something from there. I figured we would buy them a gift from "Santa" there and then plan an individual date night with mom and dad from us. I really like that idea :)   more ›
