In only a few months, Southwest Minneapolis resident Kristen Millner went from rarely biking to raising $500 to support the Midtown Greenway, a major thoroughfare for local cyclists. "I actually had not ever been on the Greenway" before a few months ago, she said. On her first ride, Millner said she came across a representative of the Midtown Greenway Coalition signing up participants for the organization's Sept. 24 Greenway Challenge, an anual fundraising ride. "I know that the group works to make (the Greenway) accessable and safe for people the whole year," she explained. "A lot of people count on it to be plowed in the winter, for it to be safe." Expansion into Southwest of Bryant, Blaisdell bike lanes and routes are among the the fall's openings.
Thursday afternoon's chilly, damp weather may have been enough to numb gloveless fingers, but it couldn't quell the spirits of over 20 Minneapolis cyclists who turned out to celebrate the official opening of the Bryant Avenue Bicycle Boulevard. The northern end of Byrant Avenue South has been formally designated a bicycle route for several years, but the newly installed signs and road markings extended the route deep into Southwest Minneapolis to 58th Street. Central to the improvements are high-visibility "sharrow" markings (short for "share the road arrows") installed at regular intervals in the pavement. The Chequamegon Fat Tire Festival is an annual 40-mile mountain bike bike race in Wisconsin.
Nearly 80 Southwest residents competed in one of the lagest mountain bike races in the country. Nearly 2,000 competed in the Chequamegon Fat Tire Festival in Wisconsin. One racer, Henry Kuhnen, posted the best overall showing among the Southwest competitors, coming in 30th. He also placed second in his age group with a time of 00:58:15.6 in the 16-mile "Short and Fat" race. Racers competed in several different races: 1,850 ran a 40-mile off-road race, 882 ran a 16-mile race, and many others participated in an obstacle race and an orientiering race.
