The Fifth District Report

Are Republicans Wasting Time on Obamacare Votes?

Rep. Keith Ellison said Republicans are neglecting other problems by convening numerous votes on legislation to repeal the Affordable Care Act.

On Thursday, 5th District Rep. Keith Ellison cast his 37th vote (depending on how you count) against a proposal to repeal the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare. The legislation has no chance of passing since the Senate will likely ignore it and President Barack Obama has promised to veto it on the off chance it ever reached his desk. Republicans defend the frequent votes by saying they want new legislators to be able to uphold their promise to constituents to try and repeal health care reform, but Democrats accuse Republicans of wasting time for political gain. Ellison released the following statement after Thursday’s vote:  Today, for the 37th time in two years, I voted against a partisan attempt by Republicans in Congress to …

Poll: Share Your Thoughts on Supreme Court Obamacare Ruling

Tell us what you think about the court's decision that the 'individual mandate,' centerpiece of Affordable Health Care Act, does not violate the Constitution.

Since the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the constitutionality of the "individual mandate," the centerpiece of the Affordable Health Care Act that President Obama signed into law last year, Patch readers have weighed in by the hundreds to share their opinions. Though the ruling happened more than a week ago, our readers continue to debate the proposal, so we're re-featuring the poll that led to this debate. Because the argument hasn't died down, we figure some of you who missed the original story may have new opinions to offer. To review, five of the nine justices agreed that the key to the act—the requirement that people either buy health insurance or pay a tax penalty—is allowed under Congress' ability to impose using its taxing power. …

The Fifth District Report

Fifth District Opponents React to Affordable Care Act Ruling

Rep. Keith Ellison and challenger Chris Fields react to the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to uphold President Obama's health care reform.

Rep. Keith Ellison and his opponent in the upcoming election, Chris Fields, have differing views on the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to uphold the Affordable Care Act. The plan, which has been dubbed “Obamacare," calls for just about every American to obtain health insurance or pay a penalty. Last week’s decision has sparked much debate among politicians. Here’s a look at what Ellison and Fields had to say about the decision: Congressman Keith Ellison: “This ruling is a significant victory for the American people.  After a two-year legal battle, the Supreme Court confirmed today that the Affordable Care Act will continue to provide millions of Americans with health coverage. The health care reform act provides that children will not be …

UPDATED: Supreme Court Obamacare Vote Could Hurt Local Health Care Providers

But financial hit is balanced by increased access to care.

Thursday’s Supreme Court vote to uphold the Affordable Care Act, better known as “Obamacare” or “the ACA,” is leaving Southwest Minneapolis’ healthcare providers unsure about the future. "On one hand, I'm a very socially liberal person. Affordable health care is a great goal," Dr. Moe Smith of Moe Bodyworks told Patch. "But as a business owner I know that under the Affordable Care Act the ones who stand to be screwed the most are my kind of small clinic." Southwest Minneapolis is dotted with small chiropractic clinics and dentists’ offices. "If all my cash-paying (uninsured) patients end up having government-funded health insurance, that's the lowest rate of reimbursement of all the major plans," she explained. "If that happens as a result…

Ellison Aims to Reveal NFIB Donors, Members

The Fifth District congressman also received criticism from Republican challenger Chris Fields over his fundraising.

Congressman Keith Ellison is calling for a list of members and donors behind the National Federation of Independent Business, an organization currently challenging the federal Affordable Care Act. According to a recent article in the Star Tribune, the paper reports Ellison's proposed disclosure is not likely to happen. The NFIB has not directly responded to Ellison's request for information. A spokeswoman for the NFIB said the organization has no plans to disclose its donor or member lists, adding that the allegations contained in Ellison's letter are without merit. Ellison and Congressional Progressive Caucus co-chair Raul Grijalva sent a letter to the National Federation of Independent Business' president, calling on the organization to …
