After umpteen snow-outs this spring, the boys varsity tennis teams from three Minneapolis high schools—Southwest High School, Washburn High School and South High School—met at Powderhorn Park Tuesday for an annual doubles tournament.

Southwest HIgh Grad Jamie Cheever Runs 2nd Fastest Steeplechase in the World

Success in California came after tough winter at home in Minnesota—and now she can dream of Moscow.

Southwest High School graduate Jamie Cheever is the second-fastest woman in the world this year in the 3,000-meter steeplechase after a stunning April 28, 2013 performance at a major race at Stanford University in California. The Team USA Minnesota website described her achievement: Team USA Minnesota's Jamie Cheever ran a personal best of 9:29.13 (previous was 9:51.42) in the 3000-meter steeplechase at the Payton Jordan Invitational and finished second in the race after 2012 Olympian Emma Coburn from Colorado, who ran 9:28.26.  Both women achieved the World 'A' standard in the steeple of 9:43 or better and are currently ranked #1 and #2 in the World in the event for 2013. Should Minnesotans Do More to Support Cycling?

The state dropped two spots in the League of American Bicyclists’ annual rankings.

(Editor's Note: The map above was created by the League of American Bicyclists.)  Minnesota is still among the top states in “bike friendliness,” but its ranking fell a couple notches in 2013, according to the League of American Bicyclists. The state was ranked fourth this year, down from second in 2012. It ranked high in legislation and enforcement, policies and programs and education and encouragement. But it was middle of the pack in infrastructure and funding and lower tier in evaluation and planning. The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) presented four neighborhood park sports coaches and their teams and 11 individual youth with 2013 Winter Sportsmanship Awards at the April 17 meeting of the Board of Commissioners. The teams were chosen among 199 MPRB winter youth sports teams for demonstrating exemplary sportsmanship throughout the winter 2013 season. Chris Kluwe Announced as Next Twin CIties Pride Grand Marshal

The Vikings punter was nominated by Carol Stoddart of the American Civil Liberties Union of Minnesota, and many others, according to a release.

Gay rights activist and Minnesota Vikings punter Chris Kluwe will be grand marshall for the 2013 Twin Cities Pride Parade this summer. "To me, it’s not about being an athlete speaking out about gay marriage or equality," Twin Cities Pride quoted Kluwe as saying in a press release. "It’s about being a human being saying ‘It’s not acceptable that this huge population of individuals have any less rights than me because they are gay.’ I am proud to stand with Twin Cities Pride as an ally with pride." Southwest Sports Store is HQ for Runners Showing Support for Boston Marathon Victims

The Southwest Minneapolis shop is a regular Tuesday night meetup spot, but this Tuesday was special, KSTP-TV reported.

About 50 runners gathered Tuesday at Marathon Sports in Southwest Minneapolis for a loop around Lake Harriet in solidarity with their fellow runners and others affected by the explosions at the 2013 Boston Marathon, KSTP-TV reported: "Lets try to think about what happened there and keep moving forward which I all think we do very well, and appreciate what we have," [Marathon Sports owner John] Long told the runners. Long said some quick words, then runner Jon Kerzmann handed out "bibs" dedicated to Boston runners. "Everyone knows someone who was there,” Kerzmann said. Reports and updates on the reported explosions on Boylston Street near the finish line of the Boston Marathon.

Last update: 4 p.m. Monday, April 15, 2013 The 2013 Boston Marathon that has been rocked by two explosions near its finish line Monday afternoon. *According to the race's website, dozens of Southwest Minneapolis residents were registered as entrants for the race, including Sen. Scott Dibble. MPR tweeted that Dibble was reported safe by his office around 3 p.m. Monday: "State Sen. Scott Dibble running Boston Marathon today reported safe. Office says he was far away from finish line when explosions occurred."
