Millers Beat St Paul's Johnson—Next Stop: Champions?

Washburn High School advances to final round of state basketball tournament

It was neck-and-neck, but in the last minutes of the game, Washburn High School's boys varsity basketball team broke out, beating St Paul's Johnson High School 75-66. The Millers face the second-seeded DeLaSalle (23-6) at 6 p.m. on Saturday night at the Target Center to determine the 2012 Class AAA basketball champion. In a tense last half, Johnson frequently matched Washburn, point for point. As the clock wound down to 4 minutes, Washburn players suddenly exploded in a frenzy of intercepted passes, blocked shots, and breakouts to rack up point after point, while Johnson could only watch their narrow lead slip away. PHOTOS: Washburn Basketball Advances In State Championships

The boy's varsity team beat Rocori High School in a close-fought game.

It was a close-fought game, but Washburn High School managed to rally and keep Rocori at bay long enough to beat them in the first round of the Class AAA state championships.  The game was Rocori coach Bob Brink's last before retiring. Washburn was the top seed, and Rocroi the bottom seed going into this week's tournament. Tomorrow at noon, Washburn will face off against the winner of this afternoon's game between St Paul's Johnson High School (20-8) and fourth seed Austin High School (23-5) in the Target Center. Now, They're Headed To State

Washburn Takes Top Seed In State Basketball Championship.

Southwest Minneapolis just might get a state title this year. This weekend, the Minnesota State High School League announced the Washburn High School boys' varsity basketball team (27-2) scored the top spot in its division of the state boy's basketball tournament. They face off against bottom seed Rocroi High School (18-11) Wednesday night at Williams Arena at the University of Minnesota. The full bracket for the Class AAA tournament is available on the MSHSL website. Washburn's girls' basketball team was knocked out in the final round of a tournament that would have qualified it for state earlier this month. Southwest High School girls' team lost its first game in its sectional tournament, and the school's boys' team also lost its first …
