Cab Driver Cited for Smoking Marijuana on Duty in Lyndale

Police pulled over the driver on Grand Avenue early Saturday morning.

A St. Paul cab driver was cited for possession of marijuana while driving through the Lyndale neighborhood a little after 1 a.m. Saturday morning.   Police officers were driving northbound on Grand Avenue toward 31st Street when a Blue and White cab pulled in front of them and they smelled, according to the police report, “an extremely strong odor of freshly burnt marijuana coming from the taxi.” When they pulled over the man, a licensed Minneapolis and St. Paul cab driver, he acknowledged that he had smoked marijuana while on service. He turned over to police a wooden box full of weed and a used pipe. Police told him he couldn’t pick up any more fares for the evening, and he was released.

To clarify, he was ticketed and let go. If you're interested, here's a story we did a while back on how the county treats its drug offenders. We didn't quite get down to the level of the guy smoking a joint in his car, but it gives a flavor of the county's philosophical approach: http://southwestminneapolis.patch.com/articles/why-some-drug-crimes-don-t-lead-to-prison   more ›

Burglaries Hit Linden Hills, Lyndale

A roundup of burglaries and other property crimes committed in Southwest Minneapolis during the last week.

For a section of the city long accustomed to burglaries, this past week may be a welcome change. Despite the warm weather, which might have tempted residents to leave their ground-floor windows open, unsecured, and easy pickings to the enterprising intruder, only one residence and one garage had been burgled. Police did not say what was taken from the residence, a Linden Hills apartment, but they report a bicycle was taken from an unlocked garage on the 3300 block of Harriet Avenue South, in Lyndale.   May 14 A Minneapolis woman’s wallet was stolen while she was walking on the 6000 block of Nicollet Avenue. She described the man as a black male in his 40s, about 5-feet-8-inches tall, medium build, wearing a red hat. A resident of the 5000 …

Ecco Man Swindled in Craigslist Apartment Scam

A woman claiming to be moving from Spain took his money after mailing a bad check.

An Ecco man trying to rent his apartment online was swindled out of $1,800. The man placed an ad on Craigslist for the $1,100 a month apartment on the 3400 block of Girard Avenue and received a reply from a woman who said she was moving to Minnesota from Spain. After corresponding through text messages, the woman sent him a check by FedEx for $3,200—almost $2,000 more than the rent. She then persuaded the man to send $1,800 via MoneyGram to a Maryland car dealership so that, according to the police report the man eventually filed, she “would have a vehicle when she arrived in Minnesota.” On May 7, the woman asked the man to send her an additional $600, at which point he discovered that her original check had bounced. When he informed her …

Minneapolis Bomb Unit Called To Device At Lynnhurst Home

A roundup of burglaries and other property crimes committed in Southwest Minneapolis during the last week.

Sunday, the Minneapolis Bomb Squad responded to an explosive device that detonated on the stoop of a home on the 4600 block of Emerson Avenue.  The newest al-Qaeda attack, it was not—the device was a homemade mix of caustic chemicals packed into a soda bottle—but residue from the bomb discolored the home's brick walk, according to Sgt. Bill Palmer, a departmental spokesperson. Devices like this usually make a loud noise when they go off, Palmer said, suggesting it was planted as a prank. "People don't realize how dangerous these things are," he said. "They've got enough explosive force to take off a couple of fingers." The bomb squad was called because the bombs' caustic remains can burn exposed skin, and the unit's safety gear was needed…

Drug Crime May Not Equal Prison Time

What happens after an offender's name hits the news?

A 21-year old local is arrested in a whirl of blue and red lights after police find a quarter-pound of marijuana in his trunk during a traffic stop. It's only enough to fill a sandwich baggie to the brim, but it now has him facing a charge of fifth-degree possession of marijuana he could face as much as five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.  Harsh? Some might say so for what could be a "youthful indiscretion," but not all is as it meets the eye. "The statute says zero to five (years), but nobody gets five," Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman told Patch. "They almost never do real time for low-level stuff." That's because the state's criminal justice system doesn't think tossing someone in the cooler for petty drug use actually …

10-Year-Old Boy Assaults 11-Year-Old-Girl On School Bus

A roundup of traffic, domestic and narcotics-related violations committed in Southwest Minneapolis in the last week.

A 10-year-old boy was cited for assaulting an 11-year-old girl the afternoon of April 18. The two shared a school bus and, just before her stop, he swung his backpack at her. She told him to stop, but before she exited the bus, he struck the right side of her face with a closed fist, causing bruising to her cheek. April 23 A 17-year-old Southwest High School student came to class smelling of marijuana and complaining of feeling ill. When school officials found a blunt in his lower pants pocket, they called police. A resident of the 6100 block of Nicollet Avenue was assaulted at her home. A Minneapolis man was cited for trespassing while panhandling on the corner of 31st Street and Stevens Avenue. He was holding a sign asking for money for …

Punches, Purses Fly In Lyndale

Revenge seems to have been the motive.

A 27-year-old resident had invited a friend to her apartment on the 3500 block of Nicollet Avenue the afternoon of April 23. But the friends started an argument that escalated into a physical confrontation, with the two pushing each other and both landing punches to the face. Eventually the friend grabbed the Nicollet Avenue resident’s purse, containing a wallet and $50 cash, and fled on foot. When police responded to the resident’s call they found her with a cracked fingernail, bleeding from its base. She declined medical attention. Until convicted, all people listed by police as suspected of committing a crime or listed as charged with a crime by county, state, or federal prosecutors should be considered innocent. Want to stay on top of …
