Why does Heartworm disease spread throughout the country?

Heartworm is not an isolated disease. It seems logical to think in the northern part of the country the disease would fade out because mosquitoes die every year. However, it continues to spread. Read on to find out how.

One reason that heartworm disease continues to spread throughout the United States is the relocation of heartworm infected animals to previously uninfected areas.  It can happen on a smaller scale whenever humans move with their canine companions.  Or it can happen on a large scale, such as we saw after Hurricane Katrina when about 250,000 pets, many of them infected with heartworm disease, were sent throughout the country.  The expansion of the territories of wild canids that are infected with heartworm disease will also contribute to the persistent spread and maintenance of heartworm disease in our domestic dog and cat populations.
