Dr. Porter of Westgate Pet Clinic is retiring

Dr. Porter has decided to retire after 31 years of practicing veterinary medicine. He has always been very compassionate about his job and truly loved what he did. He will be missed here at Westgate and in the community!

Dr. Bennett Porter III has retired after practicing veterinary medicine for 31 years in the Linden Hills and Edina Community.  Dr. Porter is the 4th in a line of family of veterinarians who have been practicing animal husbandry and  medicine in Minnesota since 1858.  This unique story began when Thomas Portier brought his family to Minnesota from Quebec in mid-1800's.  At this time, you didn't need a veterinary license to practice veterinary medicine.  Thomas Portier was a "horse doctor" by trade.  His son, Dr. Bennett Porter I, was the first official family veterinarian and graduated veterinary school in 1906. Dr. Bennett Porter II, established Westgate Pet Clinic in south Minneapolis in 1973.  Westgate Pet Clinic has been a pillar of the community ever since.  The little clinic which used to be in the old Leo's Gas Station Building at the corner of France and 44th Sreet, grew into a thriving 10 doctor clinic under the watchful eye of Dr. Bennett Porter III who purchased the business from his father in 1995.  In 2012 Dr. Bennett Porter III sold his clinic to 4 of his associates and Westgate Pet Clinic continues to be one of a shrinking number of privately owned veterinary clinics in Minneapolis.  Dr. Porter III wishes to say a big "Thank you" to all of the clients and patients he has gotten to know and love over the past 3 decades.
