Cat litter and boxes

Wondering if you should switch your cats' litter or the type of box you use? Read on to find the advantages and disadvantages of doing so!

Studies of litter box preferences in cats have shown that most cats prefer clumping clay-based litter, in uncovered litter boxes, without plastic liners.  Cats should have easy access to multiple litter boxes that are scooped at least once daily and completely cleaned once a week.  In general, cats are not fans of change.  This is particularly the case with their litter boxes.   If your cats are using their litter boxes regularly, any changes in the litter box set up should be made gradually, by changing only one litter box at a time.   At the first sign your cat is urinating outside of the litter box, schedule an appointment with your veterinarian.  Inappropriate elimination problems can be difficult to deal with, and best success occurs when the problem is addressed right away.
