Feline Asthma Attacks

Unlike dogs, cats rarely pant. If your cat is panting or open-mouth breathing, call Westgate Pet Clinic to schedule an appointment asap.

We are seeing an increase in cases of feline asthma at Westgate Pet Clinic. While there may be a secondary infection present, feline asthma itself is not contagious from cat to cat. Feline asthma is an inflammatory disease in cats’ airways with inflammation occurring in response to inhaled irritants or allergens. The increase in cases likely has a seasonal basis and is related to an increase in these particles in the air. Cats with feline asthma often have episodes during which they cough and have difficulty breathing. Like humans, cats can have “asthmatic attacks” which require emergency treatment. If your cat is coughing or breathing with more effort, call 612-925-1121 to schedule an appointment at Westgate Pet Clinic.
