Are Chicken Treats Safe for your Pet?

There have been a lot of reports of pets becoming ill after ingesting chicken treats that were manufactured in China. Westgate Pet clinic has decided not to carry any of these treats.

The FDA has been actively investigating consumer complaints about jerky pet treats causing illness in dogs and cats.  As of Sept. 24th, 2013, over 3,6000 dogs and 10 cats have reportedly become ill from eating jerky pet treats. Chicken treats are most commonly involved with the complaint.  Most of these chicken treats have been manufactured in China.  To date, none of the tests have revealed the cause of the illness, but gastrointestinal issues, as well as kidney failure have been reported. Westgate Pet Clinic, in south Minneapolis, has made the decision to only carry American made and produced treats.  The only exception is our pressed rawhide chews.  We have not been able to find a source within the USA that make pressed raw hides.  The only sources available are China or Thailand.  We have made the decision to only carry pressed raw hides made in Thailand.  Visit www.westgatepetclinicmn.com to find us.
