Tips for Recycling Holiday Decorations, Lights

Hennepin County suggests green options for disposing of holiday decorations, trees and electronics.

As you un-decorate for the holiday season, you may come across tangled strings of holiday lights that no longer work. You can recycle those lights and electric cords at Hennepin County drop-off facilities and collection sites throughout the Twin Cities participating in the Recycling Association of Minnesota’s Recycle Your Holidays program

Here are more tips for disposing holiday decorations once the holidays are over:

  • For disposal of live Christmas trees, many waste haulers will offer pick-up service during the first few weeks of January – contact your waste hauler or city recycling coordinator for more information. Trees can also be brought to a yard waste drop-off site.
  • Electronics are a popular gift for the holidays. If you are looking to get rid of old electronics after the holidays, remember that they cannot be placed in the trash. If the electronics still work, look for donation opportunities. Electronics that do not work should be recycled. Hennepin County drop-off facilities accept electronics from households for no charge.
