Washburn Works for the Win Against St. Louis Park in Boys Basketball

One Washburn and two St. Louis Park players fouled out in the hard-fought game.

Washburn and St. Louis Park battled it out on Washburn’s home court Saturday afternoon. It was a close game, but Washburn took home the win with a final score of 76-74.

It was a nail-biter of a game, each team keeping within a few points of one another. At halftime, St. Louis Park was up by 1 point, but didn’t keep the lead for long.

Washburn took advantage of a couple scoring opportunities, even holding a 12-point lead at one point during the first half and a 16-point lead during the second half.

The second half proved to be much more aggressive than the first, with each team drawing 8 fouls with 10 minutes left in the game. This means that for each foul after that, there was a 1-1 opportunity.

Each foul became a key factor in putting points on the board.

When asked what won the game for Washburn, head Coach Reggie Perkins gave a simple two-word answer, “Free throws.”

With ten minutes left in the game, each team played heavy on the fouls. Some seemed intentional, with hopes for a turnover, while others seemed like the players were truly going for the ball. Either way, the refs were blowing their whistles.

Washburn had one man foul out of the game and St. Louis Park had two. Some of the calls by the referees were questionable and this game was filled with bleacher banter from both sides, objecting to calls from the referees, or voicing opinions about calls that should have been made.

It was clear both head coaches were frustrated with the referee situation but did their best to keep their cool on the floor.

Washburn expected Park to be a challenging team to play. Both teams have similar records, Park’s being 12-6 and Millers with 13-5 before today’s game.

“All our games are going to be like that,” said head coach Reggie Perkins, anticipating the difficulties they'll face as the season proceeds.

The Millers next game is at Henry High School on Tuesday, Feb. 8 at 7 p.m.
