Washburn Advances, Southwest Bows Out At Sections

The Millers will face Belle Plaine on Saturday in the Section 2AAA semifinals

The Washburn High School football team defeated Richfield by a 21-12 margin on Tuesday in the Section 2AAA quarterfinal in Minneapolis.

The Millers advanced to face Belle Plaine in the section semifinals on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.

Washburn came from behind after trailing 6-0 in the first quarter. Antonio Ayala connected with Kyle Hughes for a touchdown strike to tie the game at 6-6, and Jeffrey Jones scored on an eight-yard rush. Coupled with a two-point conversion, the Millers took a 14-6 lead.

Affter Richfield made it 14-12, Jones scored from 50 yards out to make it 21-12 in the fourth quarter.

With the win, Washburn improved to 6-2 on the season. Richfield ends the year with a 1-8 record.

Southwest falls to Minnetonka

The Southwest High School football team lost to Minnetonka by a 56-7 margin on Tuesday in the Section 6AAAAA quarterfinal in Minnetonka.

The Skippers advanced to face Chanhassen in the section semifinals on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

The Lakers gave up 56 unanswered points to start the game on Tuesday through three quarters. In the fourth, Southwest scored its lone touchdown on a 10-yard pass from Max Roberts to Maurice Alexander.

With the win, Minnetonka improved to 7-2 on the season. Southwest ends the year with a 5-4 record.
