Sports Roundup: Spring Season Ends For Several Local Squads

A comprehensive roundup of Washburn and Southwest High School sports

Last week was a good one for both the Minneapolis Southwest and Washburn baseball teams, but for most Lakers and Millers squads the spring season came to a close with losses in the sectional playoffs.

Southwest Baseball: Lakers Advance To Third Round Of Sectional

With preliminary-round wins at favored Richfield (2-1) and Edina (7-5), the 11th-seeded Southwest baseball team lived to fight another week by advancing to the double-elimination portion of the Section 6AAA Tournament.

The Lakers upset the Spartans last Thursday after losing the regular-season finale to Richfield, before taking down the Hornets on Friday at Braemar Park. Individual statistics were not made available.

Up next for Southwest is a winner's bracket semifinal matchup against No. 10 seed Bloomington Kennedy, which brought a 7-13 record into the tournament, but has won two-straight, including a 14-4 dismantling of Benilde-St. Margaret's last Friday.

The Lakers and Eagles will meet at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at Alimagnet Park in Burnsville. Win-or-lose, the game will be the first of the evening for Southwest, who will play again at approximately 7 p.m. in the winner's bracket final, or the loser's bracket semifinal.

Washburn Baseball: Millers Win Sectional Opener

The Washburn baseball team won its postseason opener last Friday with a 4-0 shutout of 12th-seeded Fridley in the Section 4AA Tournament. Individual statistics were not made available.

With the victory, the fifth-seeded Millers advanced to a second-round matchup at No. 4 seed St. Paul Highland Park on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.

Southwest Softball: Lakers Ousted In 6AAA Opener

The eighth-seeded Southwest softball team was eliminated from postseason play, 4-1, by ninth-seeded Edina in the opening round of the Section 6AAA Tournament in Richfield on May 23.

Individual statistics were not made available. It was the second time this season that the Hornets had beaten the Lakers and this second defeat concluded Southwest's season with a 13-10 record.

Washburn Softball: Millers Season Comes To A Close

The Washburn softball team managed to claim three playoff victories before being defeated in the Section 4A Tournament one-loss bracket final, 2-1, by Maranatha Christian Academy last Thursday.

After toppling Columbia Heights (5-3) and Southwest Christian (6-3 in 10 innings) in the first two rounds of 4A play, the Millers were bested 11-1 by three-time defending state champion New Life Academy last Tuesday in the first round of double-elimination competition.

Washburn, seeded fifth, then ended No. 6 seed St. Paul Humboldt's season, 4-3, in the first game of a one-loss doubleheader on Thursday, before succumbing by a 2-1 score to second-seeded Maranatha Academy.

Individual statistics were not made available. The City Conference champion Millers concluded their spring with a 15-4 record.

Washburn Boys Tennis: Millers Defeated In 2A FinalThe Washburn boys tennis team came up one match short of advancing to the state tournament after falling 4-3 to St. Peter in the Section 2A final last Wednesday.Seeded second in the bracket, the Millers topped Fairmont (7-0) and Holy Family Catholic (4-3) in preliminary-round competition. Individual statistics were not made available.

Minneapolis Boys Lacrosse: Warriors Run Into Benilde Buzzsaw

After winning 6-3 at eighth-seeded East Ridge in the opening round of the Section 5 boys lacrosse playoffs last Wednesday, No. 9 seed Minneapolis had its season ended by defending state champion and undefeated top sectional seed Benilde-St. Margaret's, 18-5, last Friday.

Individual statistics from the BSM game were not made available, Teddy Boivin led Minneapolis with four goals in the East Ridge win.

The Warriors concluded their spring with a 7-7 record, up from 5-9 in 2010.

Minneapolis Girls Lacrosse: Holy Angels Upsets Warriors In Sectional Opener

An 11-6 upset loss to No. 11 seed Holy Angels wrapped up the sixth-seeded Minneapolis girls lacrosse team's season in the opening round of the Section 5 Tournament.

Individual results from the game were not made available. Martha Polacek ended the regular season as the Warriors' top scorer with 39 goals, while Hannah Hilden-Reid followed up with 31 goals the pre-sectional schedule.

Minneapolis ended its spring with a 7-6 overall mark.
