Sports Roundup: Southwest Boys Soccer Splits With South

Lakers, Tigers tangle twice on last two Saturdays, each winning on their home field.

The Southwest High School boys soccer team split with its fellow top-10 rankee Minneapolis South in a pair of matchups over the past two Saturdays to highlight the local athletic calendar.

Lakers Boys Soccer

A win and a loss versus South sandwiched a 15-0 defeat of Edison High School on Sept. 22 as the Southwest boys soccer team improved to 8-2 overall and 6-1 in the Minneapolis City Conference.

Individual statistics were not made available. The Lakers, who enter this week as the eighth-ranked team in Class AA, lost to the then-number three Tigers by a 3-2 score on the road on Sept. 17, then defeated second-ranked South 4-3 at home on Sept. 24.

The Southwest girls soccer team earned two wins, two ties and a loss over the past two weeks to enter the final two weeks of its regular season at 4-5-2 on the year. 

Individual statistics were not made available. Wins of 12-0 over Edison and 7-0 versus Henry High School went with a 1-1 tie to Washburn as well as a 2-0 loss and a 0-0 tie against South.

Millers Boys Soccer

A 4-1 stretch improved the Washburn boys soccer team to 7-3-1 overall and 5-3 in the City. 

Through nine games, Ben Simpson led the Millers with 10 goals, with Joey Froehlich netting six scores; goalkeeper Andy MacDonald made 50 saves on 62 shots through his first eight games.

Washburn shutout three teams during its run, blanking Henry 11-0, Roosevelt 1-0 and St. Paul's Highland Park High School 2-0, also claiming a 4-1 victory versus Edison and losing 3-2 at South.

Millers Girls Soccer

Heading into its final five games with a 6-3-1 record, the Washburn girls soccer team compiled a 1-2-1 mark over the last two weeks. 

Sidney Cottew and Audrey DeVaughn scored respectively in a 2-1 loss to South on Sept. 13 and a 1-1 tie versus Southwest on Sept. 15.

Statistics were not available from Washburn's 7-0 shutout of Roosevelt on Sept. 20 and 1-0 loss to Highland Park on Sept. 24.

Entering the week, the Millers had a 3-1-1 City record, good for second place in the conference.

Lakers Volleyball

Three consecutive 3-0 victories against Roosevelt, South and Washburn boosted the Southwest volleyball team's record to 9-5 overall and a conference-best 4-0 in the City. Individual statistics were not made available. 

Millers Volleyball

The Washburn volleyball team saw a two-match winning streak come to an end in a 3-0 loss to Southwest on Sept. 22. Previously, the Millers had defeated Henry and Edison by 3-0 scores and head into this week with a 7-2 record—2-2 in the City. Individual statistics were not made available. 

Lakers Girls Tennis

The Southwest girls tennis team heads into this week with a 7-3 record after 7-0 wins over Washburn and Roosevelt and a 4-3 defeat of Robbinsdale Armstrong over the past two weeks. Individual statistics were not made available. 

Lakers Girls Swimming and Diving

After finishing fourth at the Bloomington Kennedy Invitational on Sept. 17, the Southwest girls swimming and diving team defeated Wayzata, 103-74, on Sept. 20. Individual statistics were not made available. 

Scores and statistics were not available for: Washburn girls tennis, girls swim/dive, cross-country, Southwest cross-country.
