Sports Roundup: Millers, Lakers Enter Heart Of Autumn Sports Schedule

Washburn, Southwest athletic squads compete in several post-Labor Day contests.

Washburn and Southwest High Schools' athletic teams launched into their post-Labor Day schedules last week as the Millers and Lakers move into the heart of the autumn sports season.

Washburn Girls Soccer

The Washburn girls soccer team improved to 5-1 on the season with back-to-back shutouts last Thursday and Friday.

First up was a 3-0 win at Minneapolis Henry, followed by an 11-0 thumping of visiting Minneapolis Edison.

Sidney Cottew scored twice against the Patriots, with Morgan Cottew netting one goal; Reina Nelson logged three goals against the Tommies, while Audrey DeVaughn and Madison Erdall tallied two apiece.

Splitting the shutouts were goaltenders Sophie Pratt (Edison) and Josephine Archambault (Henry).

Southwest Boys Soccer

Wins of 8-3 at Roosevelt last Tuesday and 3-0 versus visiting Woodbury on Saturday boosted the sixth-place Southwest boys soccer team to 4-1 on the year.

Offensive statistics were not made available. Goalkeeper Joshua Jones earned the shutout with four saves against Woodbury after also making four stops at Roosevelt.

Washburn Boys Soccer

A 2-1 defeat of Edison followed by a 7-1 stuffing of Henry upped the Washburn boys soccer team’s record to 3-0-1 entering this week.

Ben Simpson leads the Millers with five goals after scoring three last week, with Cheick Diwarra scoring twice against Henry for his first two goals of the autumn.

Southwest Girls Soccer

The Southwest girls soccer team found itself on both ends of a 5-0 score last week, defeating Roosevelt by that count on Tuesday before losing by the same tally on Wednesday to enter this week at 1-3. Individual statistics were not made available.

Washburn Volleyball

With a perfect 4-0 appearance, the Washburn volleyball team won the Columbia Heights Tournament on Saturday without losing a single game.

The Millers swept Edison, West Lutheran, the Academy of Sciences and Agriculture and the host Hylanders to improve to 5-1 on the season. Individual statistics were not made available.

Southwest Volleyball

Going 2-2 on the day, the Southwest volleyball team finished sixth in the Aerie Challenge at Apple Valley High School on Saturday.

The Lakers topped Concordia Academy in two matches and Virginia in three matches, while losing to Caledonia 2-1 and Bloomington Kennedy 2-0 to bring its season record to 6-5 in its final competition until Sept. 20. Individual statistics were not made available.

Washburn Girls Tennis

The Washburn girls tennis team improved to 3-3 on the season with three-straight 7-0 defeats of Roosevelt, Minneapolis North and Edison last week. Individual statistics were not made available.

Southwest Cross-Country

Individuals from the Southwest cross-country teams competed in the Bauman/Rovn Invitational at Gale Woods Farm in Minnetrista last Thursday.

Ronnie Stimson finished 14th in the boys race in a time of 16 minutes, 51.2 seconds, followed by Peter Metzdorff (17:31.8) in 36th and Austin Knowlton (17:36.2) in 39th.

Kara Maloney was the top Lakers girls finisher, taking 62nd in 16:52.8, with Abby Counihan (17:16.5) and Anna Ryden (17:16.6) placing 85th and 86th, respectively.

Washburn Cross-Country

The Washburn boys and girls cross-country teams both finished 13th in the Ron Kretsch Invitational at Bassett Creek Park in Crystal on Friday.

Hannah Oscarson took 10th individually with a time of 9:13, as girls teammate Skylar Tupper placed 44th in 9:51; Martin Donovan led the Millers boys with a 54th-place run of 11:36.
