Lakers Girls, Both Millers Squads Eliminated In Soccer Sectionals

Southwest boys still alive in fight to return to state tournament.

And then there was one.

With the Southwest girls joining the Washburn boys and girls amongst the teams eliminated from postseason play, the Lakers boys soccer team survived last week to advance to its sectional championship game. They beat South Tuesday night for a chance to compete in their state tournament.

With a 3-0 upset victory at second-seeded Wayzata on Saturday, the third-seeded Southwest boys soccer team advanced to the Section 6AA Tournament title round. Then, on Tuesday, they beat No. 1 seed South High School at Roosevelt High School's fields, 2-1.

Individual statistics from Saturday's or Tuesday's games were not made available. The Lakers topped Hopkins 3-0 in the sectional opener last Thursday before its big win at Wayzata. Southwest will now return to the Class AA state tournament, where they finished second to Apple Valley last year.

Lakers Girls Soccer

A 4-0 loss in the Section 6AA Tournament opener last Thursday ended the Southwest girls soccer team's season with a 5-6-3 record. Individual statistics were not made available.

Millers Boys Soccer

The seventh-seeded Washburn boys soccer team made it three rounds before being eliminated from the Section 3A Tournament by third-seeded Holy Angels on Saturday in a 2-0 loss.

After a 2-0 defeat of No. 10 seed St. Paul Highland Park in their final home game of the season on Tuesday, the Millers shocked second-seeded DeLaSalle — the fifth-ranked team in Class A — with a 2-1 win in downtown Minneapolis on Thursday before ralling in Richfield in the sectional semifinals.

Individual statistics were not made available. Washburn concluded the season with a 9-7-2 record.

Millers Girls Soccer

After topping ninth-seeded St. Paul Central in its home finale last Tuesday, the eighth-seeded Washburn girls soccer team saw its season come to an end with a 4-1 loss at top-seeded and No. 2-ranked Blake last Thursday in the Section 3A quarterfinals.

Individual statistics were not made available. The Millers compiled an 8-6-3 record this season.

Lakers Football

The Southwest football team won its regular-season finale, 29-6, at Henry last Friday. The victory ensured a .500 record for the Lakers, who will carry a 4-3 record into the sectional playoffs.

Dantavian Sears ran for 105 yards and two touchdowns in the victory, with DeAnthony McKinley running for another score before a touchdown pass from Max Roberts to Trayvon McKinney capped the offensive output in the triumph.

Millers Volleyball

The Washburn volleyball team went 1-1 last week, losing 3-1 to Holy Angels and defeating Edison 3-0 on Tuesday and Thursday, respectively.

Individual statistics were not made available. The Millers, 7-1 in the Minneapolis City Conference, play at Southwest on Monday— a win could ensure Washburn a share of the conference title — before closing out the regular season versus visiting South on Wednesday.

Lakers Volleyball

The Southwest volleyball team won 3-0 over South on Thursday in its lone match of last week.

Individual statistics were not made available. The 16-10 Lakers, 8-0 in the City, host Washburn on Monday night. A win will ensure at least a share of the conference championship heading into a regular-season finale at Edison in Wednesday.
