Sports Round-up: Spring Season In Full Swing For Lakers, Millers

Minneapolis Southwest and Washburn teams competed in a full schedule of sports last week.

The spring sports season began in earnest last week as teams from Minneapolis Washburn and Southwest high schools competed in a full schedule of events.

Washburn Baseball: Millers Take Two Of Three In First Week

The Minneapolis Washburn baseball team went 2-1 in its first week of play, losing 7-4 to Minneapolis South on April 11 before topping St. Paul Como Park by a 3-0 score on the road two days later. The Millers then topped Minneapolis Roosevelt, 14-0, on Friday.

Lenny Dominguez went 4-for-4 against South before pitching a four-hit shutout against Como Park. Zach Austin batted .444 with six runs batted in during the three-game stretch. Trevor Stone struck out eight and gave up one hit against the Teddies.

Washburn is scheduled to play at Minneapolis Edison on Monday, before returning home to play Minneapolis North on Wednesday.

Southwest Baseball: Lakers Open Season 2-0

With season-opening victories over Minneapolis Roosevelt (17-0) and Patrick Henry (9-1), the Minneapolis Southwest baseball team headed into the second week of its season with a 2-0 record.

Individual statistics from last week's games were not available.

The Lakers are scheduled to continue City Conference competition with a road game at Minneapolis North on Monday, and home match-ups versus Minneapolis Edison and Edison on Wednesday and Friday afternoons, respectively.

Minneapolis Girls Lacrosse: Warriors Split Opening Pair

The Minneapolis girls lacrosse team won one of its two opening-week games, defeating White Bear Lake by a 10-9 score on Thursday after losing 10-6 to Eastview on April 12.

Hannah Hilden-Reid leads the Warriors with seven goals in two games, while Martha Polacek has five goals and three assists over the same span.

Minneapolis hosts Hill-Murray on Tuesday, before traveling to Bloomington Kennedy on Wednesday.

Minneapolis Boys Lacrosse: City Co-Op Team 2-0 After First Week

The Minneapolis boys lacrosse team is 2-0 after claiming victories in both of its first two games last week.

Minneapolis defeated Holy Family Catholic, 5-3, on Thursday, then topped Coon Rapids, 6-1, on Saturday.

Teddy Boivin leads the team with four goals and two assists in the pair of victories, while Sam Cotch and Jacob Ogren have two goals apiece heading into week two.

Minneapolis hosts St. Thomas Academy in its lone game of this week on Wednesday.

Washburn Softball: Millers Enter Week at 2-2

The Minneapolis Washburn softball team is 2-2 after its first four games as the Millers defeated Columbia Heights and Blake, while falling to DeLaSalle and Minneapolis South.

After wiping out Columbia Heights, 17-3, in the season opener on April 8, the Millers fell by a 5-3 score at South on April 11 and rallied to defeat Blake, 5-3, the next day.

However, Washburn was on the other side of a late surge as DeLaSalle recorded five runs in the seventh inning to hang an 8-7 loss on the Millers on Thursday.

Individual statistics were not available.

Washburn is slated to host Minneapolis Edison on Monday and head out on the road for games at Minneapolis North and Minnehaha Academy on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively.

Southwest Softball: Lakers Throttle Pair Of City Rivals

With wins of 17-0 against Minneapolis Roosevelt and 18-2 versus Minneapolis Patrick Henry last week, the Minneapolis Southwest softball team heads into this week with a 2-0 record.

Individual results were not available.

The Lakers host Minneapolis North on Monday, with a road game at Minneapolis Edison on Wednesday.

Washburn Boys Tennis: Millers Win First Three Contests Of Season

The Minneapolis Washburn boys tennis team won its first three matches of the season before dropping its first contest, 7-0, at Eden Prairie on Wednesday.

Prior to the loss, the Millers bested Hutchinson and St. Louis Park by identical 4-3 scores on April 6 and 8, respectively, then shutout Minneapolis Roosevelt, 7-0, on April 12.

Individual statistics were not available.

Washburn plays Minneapolis South at the Reed Sweatt Tennis Center on Wednesday in its lone game of the week.

Southwest Boys Tennis: Lakers 2-1 Over First Three Matches

The Minneapolis Southwest boys tennis team went 2-1 last week with wins against Holy Angels (4-3) and Minneapolis Roosevelt (7-0) on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively, after falling 7-0 to Bloomington Jefferson in the season opener on April 11.

Individual statistics were not available.

The Lakes host Minneapolis Edison on Tuesday, before wrapping up the week on the road at Robbinsdale Armstrong on Wednesday and at Minneapolis Patrick Henry on Friday.

Results were not available for the Southwest or Washburn badminton, golf or track and field teams from last week's competitions.
