Joel VanHazinga's card of 82 earned him medalist honors and led the Lakers boys to a championship score of 382.

Minneapolis Boys Lacrosse: Warriors Begin Playoffs On Wednesday

After finishing off a 6-6 regular season, the Minneapolis boys lacrosse team earned a No. 9 seed for the Section 5 playoffs and is scheduled to play at No. 8 East Ridge on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. in the tournament opener.

The Warriors lost to East Ridge at home, 11-6, on May 18 before defeating Owatonna, 9-3, in the regular-season finale on May 20.

Teddy Boivin led Minneapolis with 22 points this spring, with Billy Makholm netting 20 points in the regular season.

Minneapolis Girls Lacrosse: Holy Angels First Up In Sectional Playoffs

The Minneapolis girls lacrosse team begins play in the Section 5 Tournament on Wednesday as the No. 6 seed Warriors host No. 11 Holy Angels on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Washburn High School. 

Minneapolis concluded a 7-5 regular season with a 12-7 defeat of Visitation on May 17 and a 21-4 loss at Rochester John Marshall on May 20.

Martha Polacek and Hannah Hilden-Reid led the Warriors with 49 and 40 points, respectively, this spring.

Southwest Softball: Lakers Claim Twin Cities Championship

The Southwest softball team ended a 25-year losing streak for Minneapolis teams in the Twin Cities Championship game by defeating St. Paul Como Park, 11-6, on May 16 to claim the cross-river title.

Rachel Polland hit a two-run home run and went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead the Lakers in the victory.

Southwest lost its other three games last week, falling 10-8 to St. Paul Johnson on May 16, 5-2 to Robbinsdale Cooper on May 18 and 13-2 to Minnetonka on May 19 to conclude its regular season.

The City Conference champion Lakers, 13-9 overall and 11-1 in the circuit this year, open play in the Section 6AAA Tournament on Monday as the No. 8 seed, with a first-round game against No. 9 Edina at 5 p.m. at Richfield Middle School.

Washburn Softball: Millers Win First Two Sectional Playoff Games

The Washburn softball team won its first two playoff games in the Section 4A Tournament last week.

After eking by No. 12 seed Columbia Heights, 5-3, on May 17, the fifth-seeded Millers upset No. 4 Southwest Christian, 6-3, on May 19 to move onto the winner's bracket semifinals.

The task for Washburn is daunting in its next playoff game, however, as the Millers will take on three-time defending Class A state champion New Life Academy at Woodbury's Bielenberg Sports Center at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Washburn Baseball: Millers Finish Second In City Conference

Entering the final week of the regular season, the Minneapolis Washburn baseball team holds a 13-3 overall record and claimed second-place in the City Conference with a 10-2 circuit mark.

Washburn swept its final three City games, defeating Southwest (5-4), North (20-0) and Patrick Henry (10-0) on May 16, 17 and 18, respectively.

Individual statistics were not available. The Millers are scheduled to play DeLaSalle in its regular-season finale on Monday, with the sectional tournament slated to begin on May 28.

Southwest Baseball: Lakers Claim Third In Final Conference Standings

While a 5-4 loss to Washburn on May 16 doomed the Southwest baseball team to a third-place finish in the City Conference, the Lakers did bounce back to claim wins over City champion South (3-1) on May 18 and St. Paul Johnson (5-3) May 19 before losing to Richfield (5-3) on May 20.

The 2-2 week gave Southwest a 12-6 overall record heading into the final week of the regular season after the Lakers concluded City play with a 9-3 mark.

Southwest hosts Minnehaha Academy on Monday night, then plays at DeLaSalle in the regular-season finale on Tuesday afternoon.

Washburn Boys Golf: Millers Third In City Conference Championship Meet

The Washburn boys golf team took third at the City Conference championship meet on May 16 at Minikahda Country Club with a score of 433. Individual results were not available.

Results from the City Conference championship track and field meet on May 19 were not available.
