Windom Student Wins Regional Writing Contest

Over 6,500 students nationwide entered the essay contest on immigration.

A Windom Spanish Dual Immersion School fifth-grader was the regional winner of a yearly national essay contest on immigration issues.

Windom student Anna Christian was chosen as the Minnesota and Dakotas winner for her essay, "America is a Museum" (See PDF). The contest is hosted by the American Immigration Council. The topic this year was, "Why I am Glad America is a Nation of Immigrants."

Christian's winning essay reflects on the diversity brought to the United States by immigrants. It concludes with the following line: "I am happy to live in America, because it’s like sharing the world."

Over 6,500 fifth grade students submitted essays this year. This is the first time Windom students have participated in the essay contest, although they hope to continue their participation in coming years.

Essays are judged by volunteer attorneys of the American Immigration Lawyers Association, as well as guest judges. Past judges have included author Dave Eggers and former Massachusetts U.S. Sen. Ted Kennedy.
