STMA Rotary Club is pleased to announce its new “Student of the Month Award” program which recognizes St. Michael-Albertville High School juniors for their school and community involvement. The award’s first recipients are Emily Achterkirch and Mercedes Zahler, who were recognized as Rotary Students of the Month for October at Rotary’s Oct. 9 meeting.
Emily is the daughter of Todd and Diane Achterkirch of St. Michael. She is
involved in numerous activities including National Honor Society, hockey, and track and field. She was voted her hockey team’s MVP and Miss Defense, Mississippi 8 All-Conference and Section 8 All-Star, Academic All-Conference, has received three-sport awards in soccer and track and is a two-time department award winner in both math and engineering and technology. Emily volunteers at the Crow River Senior Center and is involved in Students Stepping Up. She plans to major in mechanical engineering and to play Division 1 college hockey.
Mercedes is the daughter of Rhonda and Joe Zahler of St. Michael. She
helps with the St. Michael Foundation, a group that helps handicapped children, is involved in her church’s youth group core team, and is vice president of the ALIV pro-life group. She also volunteers at Feed My Starving Children and helps the elderly clean their houses and cars. Mercedes plans to become an OB/GYN or surgeon.
“Rotary is very proud to honor Mercedes and Emily,” said Kevin Lenz, STMA Rotary Club Community Service Chairman. “These young ladies are very committed to academic excellence and community service, and exemplify the core values of Rotary. We wish them all the best in achieving their goals.”
