Southwest Falls to Eastview Boys Soccer 2-0

Lakers Outshoot the Lightning but can't breakthrough to score

The  boys soccer team kept unbeaten Eastview within striking distance, but the Lightning were too much for the Lakers in a 2-0 win in the Class AA state semifinals on Tuesday at the Metrodome.

The Lakers (15-3-1) will now face Maple Grove on Thursday in the third place game. Game time is set for 8 a.m.

Eastview’s Mathew Gweh was the difference on Tuesday. His pair of goals were the lone scores in the game—one coming in the 34th minute to break a scoreless tie and another in the 77th minute to ice the game—and they were enough to send the Lightning to the state title match.

Despite out-shooting Eastview 17-8 in the game, including 14-4 in the second half, the Lakers couldn’t find their way past the Lightning’s goalkeepers. Sam Ruelas made seven saves before leaving the game with a head injury with 5:30 to play, and Treston Kederer made three saves to end the game and preserve the shutout.

Lakers goalie Ben Eccles made one save on the night.

Southwest has not faced Maple Grove (14-4-2) this season. The Crimson lost 2-0 to Eden Prairie in Tuesday’s first semifinal match.
