Report: School Performance Data a Mixed Bag for Kenny Educators

"Multiple Measurement Ratings" designed to improve on No Child Left Behind system

According to the Twin Cities Daily Planet, the Minnesota Department of Education's new Multiple Measurement Ratings school evaluation system is not all it's cracked up to be. Teachers and leaders at Southwest Minneapolis' Kenny Community School found themselves confused when the school was simultaneously labeled a successful "celebration" school and a troubled "focus" school.

For school leaders like Gibbs, the new system is confusing. Most teachers interviewed hardly knew what it was...(Principal Bill) Gibbs agrees that Kenny should be celebrated for the dramatic changes it’s undergone. But change didn’t happen in a year, and the new ranking system won’t change a school culture that revolves around data and test scores

Partly by using in-house data tools, Kenny staff have tried to turn their school around since difficult times five years ago. They have scored some successes with poor students and students of color since then.
