Minneapolis Public Schools Names New Chief Executive Officer: Leader Letter

Michael Goar will assume the position effective July 8.

Editor's Note: The following is a the latest editon of the Leader Letter from Minneapolis Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Bernadeia H. Johnson.

Dear MPS Partners and Friends,

I am pleased to announce that I have selected Michael Goar as new chief executive officer (CEO) for Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS) effective July 8. The CEO serves as acting superintendent in the absence of the superintendent and oversees strategic planning, human resources and operations for the school district.

Mr. Goar most recently served as executive director of Generation Next, a broad-based Twin Cities nonprofit partnership dedicated to educational excellence and narrowing the achievement gap. An experienced administrator, Mr. Goar served MPS as executive director of human resources and labor relations before going on to key leadership posts in the Memphis and Boston public schools. He was chief operating officer of Memphis City Schools and deputy superintendent/chief operating officer of Boston Public Schools. He grew up in Minneapolis and graduated from Washburn High School.

I am thrilled to bring Mr. Goar aboard to help us reach our ambitious goals. He brings intimate knowledge of our school district as well as the best practices of other major school systems. In addition, his nonprofit work has given him insight into the many other community organizations whose support is so critical to the success of our students and their families.

Of his new role, Mr. Goar said, “I am proud to have been selected to help the Minneapolis Board of Education and Dr. Johnson transform MPS into a model of effective education in the 21st century. We are committed to discovering the best practices, both within our system and elsewhere, and putting them in place. With productive partnerships internally and externally, and a healthy dose of innovation, we will improve the learning outcomes of Minneapolis students.”

I look forward to working with Mr. Goar and my leadership team on behalf of MPS’ 34,000 students and their families. Thank you for your continued support of our efforts.
Sincerely,

Bernadeia H. Johnson, Ed.D.
Superintendent of Schools
