Find Out What Your School Taxes Bought

A few years ago, the Minneapolis Public Schools' Board of Education decided to splurge, spending nearly $42 million on a new headquarters while closing down schools left and right, saying they didn't have enough money to keep them all open.

True, consolidating the district's three headquarters sites into one new building that could be more efficiently kept up, heated, and cooled is projected to save the district a pretty penny. But that's not how it looked at the time to some parents, angry that their child would have to jump schools mid-stream.

But no matter where you sat on issue at the time, the Minneapolis Public Schools is giving taxpayers a chance to see what their tax dollars bought, at an open house on August 18. 

According to MinnPost's Beth Hawkins, a longtime education reporter who got a sneak peak of the new building at 1250 West Broadway, it's a pretty cool place, that could help district staff work better.

If you go: 

Time: Saturday, Aug. 18, from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.

At: 1250 W. Broadway Ave. 

What: School district headquarters open house, plus the kick-off to MPS' “Attend to Achieve” program, a drive to get 95 percent of Minneapolis students attending school 95 percent of the time.
