Excessive Heat Causes School Closures in Minneapolis

Minneapolis Public Schools canceled 27 school programs on Thursday and Friday due to heat.

According to a statement on Minneapolis Public Schools’ website, classes were canceled at 27 school programs in buildings without air conditioning Thursday and Friday. School will resume after Labor Day, Sept. 3.

The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory through Aug. 29.

“In deciding to cancel classes at select schools, we took into account the assessments of MPS leadership, school principals and leaders in or Health Services and Emergency Management, Safety and Security departments,” Larissa Chinwah, communications and public affairs specialist, said in the statement. “While we were able to deploy additional resources to lessen the effects of heat as much as possible Monday through Wednesday, we determined that the level of support necessary for student health and safety at these locations would be unsustainable for the remainder of the week.”
