Burroughs, Kenny Teachers Named "Teacher of the Year" Candidates

Winner to be announced in May.

Thre Southwest Minneapolis teachers are among the 135 candidates for a prestigious "Teacher of the Year" award from the state's teacher's union.

The list was announced Thursday afternoon.

Third grade teacher Daniel Kilibarda and first grade teacher Joyce Lasser from Burroughs Community School and autism teacher Stacy Moreno at Kenny Community School are joined on the list by three other Minneapolis teachers from Lucy Laney Elementary School, Edison High School, and Marcy Open School.

Over the coming weeks, a 25-member panel of community leaders will winow down the 135 names to a group of semi-finalists, finalists, and eventually one winner to be announced May 5 at the Minneapolis Marriott Hotel.

In past years, teachers from many local schools, including Ramsey Fine Arts Academy, Whittier International Elementary, and Lake Harriet Upper Campus, have been named candidates.
