Burroughs' Daniel Kilibarda a Finalist for 'Teacher of the Year' Honor

Winner to be announced in May.

Ten teachers from across the state were named finalists for Education Minnesota's prestigious 2013 Teacher of the Year Award last week, including Burroughs Community School's Daniel Kilibarda.

Kilibarda, a third-grade teacher, was selected as a finalist by a 25-member panel of community leaders. There were a total of 135 candidates before the panel winowed the list to just 10.

Other teachers nominated for the award were first-grade Burroughs teacher Joyce Lasser, and autism teacher Stacy Moreno at Kenny Community School. Three other Minneapolis teachers from Lucy Laney Elementary School, Edison High School, and Marcy Open School were also nominated.

In past years, teachers from many local schools, including Ramsey Fine Arts Academy, Whittier International Elementary, and Lake Harriet Upper Campus, have been named candidates.

The selection panel meets again May 4 to conduct individual interviews with the 10 finalists and to cast votes for the 2013 winner. The winner will be announced May 5 at the Minneapolis Marriott Hotel.
