New Store to Replace Old Windom Perkins Building

A Windom eyesore may soon vanish, if all goes well for prospective developers the former Perkins building on the 6000 block of Nicollet when they come before Minneapolis' City Planning Commission on Jan. 7.

The Minneapolis Perkins closed in 2011 when its parent company filed for bankruptcy.

Goodwill Easter Seals is proposing to build a Goodwill store on the site of the restaurant and its two adjacent parking lots. The two-story building will entirely replace the ex-eatery, according to documents posted with the commision's agenda. A donations-processing facility will be located in the rear of the proposed building.

Final plans aren't yet available, but a report by city planning staff states the entire Goodwill facility will be just under 21,000 square feet. For comparison, the three-lot site is 32,000 square feet, and the report says a landscaped parking lot with 32 spaces will face the street on a little over half the parcel.

A loading dock will be part of the design, and will be located in the back of the building.

City staff are proposing the commission approve the proposed store.
