Two 'Pirates' File for Minneapolis Mayor Race

35 have filed papers to run in the race to replace R.T. Rybak

With the filing period now closed, a total of 35 people have filed paperwork to run in the race to replace Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak, including two "pirates."

"Captain Jack Sparrow" is a former member of the Occupy Minneapolis group and other Minneapolis left organizations. According to the candidate's website, "Sparrow" is calling for collectivization, requiring police carry insurance against claims of police brutality, legalized prostitution, and free treatment for drug addicts.

Kurtis Hannah is running as the Minnesota Pirate Party candidate. Unaffiliated with nautical acts of brigandage, Hannah's political group instead embraces government transparency and robust personal privacy. A similarly-named, similarly-oriented political party in Sweden has received attention in the past for its support of "net neutrality" and information privacy.

This fall, city residents will vote using Ranked-Choice Voting, where they list their first, second, and third choices for office. More information on the process can be found on the city website.
