The Growler: Mpls. Mayoral Candidates on Beer Topics

Looking at Minneapolis city politics through beer goggles.

The Growler asked the people running for mayor of Minneapolis about topics dear to beer-drinkers' hearts, including favorite local brews. Here are excerpts from each interview. (Click on the candidates' names for their full Growler interviews.)

Cam Winton

G: What are some of your local favorites?

CW: 612Brew, I really enjoyed that. I live in the Fulton neighborhood, and so I’m a little partial to Fulton. There’s plenty of great beer out there, but it’s always cool to see my neighborhood represented.

DS: I won’t get into that one! Someone’s going to get mad at me. I do, I drink it every chance I get, but I won’t tell you what it is.

G: What are some of your favorite local beers?

MA: I don’t drink anymore, but I polled our campaign staff—one that, keep in mind, is comprised of a far-ranging assortment of people from all across Minneapolis. Consistently, it’s fair to say that Fulton’s Lonely Blonde and Sweet Child of Vine, along with Surly’s Furious and Darkness are the top contenders.

Jackie Cherryhomes

G: Are you a craft beer fan yourself?

JC: I am somewhat of a beer fan. I’ll admit that I’m more of a wine fan. I like the Czech Pilsner brewed by Minneapolis Town Hall Brewery.

Betsy Hodges:

BH: Craft beer is part of the package that makes Minneapolis such a great place to be, and so we need to sell it like that. We need to say ‘Hey, Minneapolis is a great place to be, and this is one big reason why.’ And I think there are a lot of things we can do to tie the local beer community into the larger beer community.

Gary Schiff

G: Any favorite beers?

GS: The irony of all my work for the local beer industry is that I don’t drink beer. I’m gluten-free, so I’m still looking for the best gluten-free local beer. Someone’s starting a gluten-free brewery in St. Paul. I’ll still try them, though.
